    Open Heart - Lisa Bonham

    Part 1: The Present

Amanda swept into the lecture hall designated for dissertations, with steps both purposeful and languid. Upon entering, she waved a hand dripping with high end jewelry in a lazy wave at her colleagues. They resented her place in this room, she could tell. But she had worked hard on her presentation on nasal reconstruction. Amanda deserved to be here. Despite their resentment, she knew they were watching her powerful stride. It was her hallmark—being a woman of both drive and sensuality. It was a powerful combination that worked wonders and opened doors.

The lights flickered, as a cue that the dissertations would proceed soon. Amanda stood up a little straighter in her seat, clasping her perfectly manicured hands in front of her, awaiting her moment in the spotlight. It was one of the best feelings in the world, all eyes on her. She had spent years in anticipation of this moment, and she longed for her moment to shine.

Amanda Ellsworth will be our next candidate to speak on her findings regarding nasal reconstruction. The elderly board member seemed slightly bored of his own voice. In fact, it almost seemed like he was stifling a yawn.

Amanda stood slowly from her seat and walked with that same pace towards the podium, allowing her thick, blonde hair to dance around her hips, hypnotizing the audience. She noticed the expression of the clearly bored speaker had changed dramatically, drawn to her sensual curves and the way her hair danced in time to her steps.

It was fun, drawing their attention like this. But it was also business. Amanda knew how to use every asset to her advantage. She was more than just an intelligent young woman. She was a woman who brought men to attention with her very movements. That feeling that power—it was indescribable.

She tugged on the hem of her Gucci skirt—only slightly—before flashing the audience a brilliant smile. Her green eyes glittered in the spotlight and she felt herself in her element, perfectly at ease. She began her presentation but could tell by the way she had captured their attention that she was on the right path. Her research and charisma would do the rest.

Following her dissertation, Amanda graduated at the top of her class. The Harvard graduation ceremony had been widely publicized and the seats were filled with not only families of those she spent the last few years with but journalists and photographers from all over Massachusetts.

The whole affair was a bit much, even for Amanda. Still, she sat through the entirety of the official fanfare with a wide smile. It was what was expected, after all. She would play her part in the ceremony filled with a mixed sentiment of joy and angst. It was on to the next step. The next task to conquer.

The security Amanda’s father had paid for was doing their job, keeping most of the journalists and their nosy photographers away from the family as they exited the large hall and made their way towards the black Mercedes Benz the driver had pulled close to the curb. Amanda, her father Richard, her stepmother Theresa, and stepbrother Aiden slid into the back seat and the cheerful praise started. Her father spoke of her future at the Ellsworth Private Hospital and Amanda smiled, stars in her eyes at her prospects.

It was a few months after graduation, on a warm Thursday afternoon, while Amanda read a medical journal, that the call came. She didn’t recognize the caller ID and her heart jumped at the prospect. She had put out feelers for potential next steps. This could be the answer she’d been waiting for.

Hello. Amanda Ellsworth? The voice was unfamiliar.

This is she, she said, her voice as smooth as honey. She knew how to turn on the charm when it might serve her.

This is Edward Stalton. I’m calling from the Medical Board offices. We have a potential opportunity we think you might be interested in. Do you have a few moments to discuss it?

Of course. She fought to keep the excitement out of her voice, maintaining that calm composure she always exuded.
