This Novel is dedicated to one of my greatest friends, Beth. See you on the other side my friend…
Chapter 1
White was the only thing Nadia saw around her. She couldn’t feel anything in her extremities. She wasn’t afraid, just calm. Slowly, an image began to focus in front of her. At first, it appeared to be a blemish on a pure white page. As the image became clearer, she could distinguish what it was. It was her sleeping in bed peacefully. She was looking down upon herself. The next thing she heard was a smooth, easy voice lightly radiating through the air.
Nadia. Naaaadia. Its time to go.
One of the most visually pleasing pictures filled her field of vision. It was a man. He was absolutely one of the most beautiful creatures her light brown eyes ever took in. His face was defined, and chiseled. He had long shoulder length blonde hair. It wasn’t groomed at all. It seemed as if the top of his head had erupted like a volcano and curly yellow flames had dispersed from the top of his cranium and flowed down to his shoulders. He had thin perfect lips. The most striking feature was the radiant green eyes that peered into hers. Those perfect lips inched over the right side exposing a single dimple on his untanned face. She could suddenly feel a sensation in her own lips. She worked up enough energy to mutter out just over a whisper.
Hey, Honey. Ummm why did you paint a picture of me sleeping over the bed?
So you could wake up to the same breathtaking sight that I see every time I wake up next to you.
He thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. She thought those pretty green eyes of his didn’t work. She thought she was far from beautiful. She didn’t fit the model type of woman. She wasn’t severely obese, but she did carry a voluptuous figure. She did love her vibrant reddish auburn hair. Everyone did. She always kept it quite long and straight. It complimented her eyes so well. She thought she was pretty, but not gorgeous. Whenever she tried to get back down to the size she was before she met her husband, he would always ask her not to. He found her full figure to be quite the turn on. She most likely wouldn’t have been too concerned about her size if her friends weren’t so extremely thin. He always made her feel good. While lying next to him, he would caress her entire body, not just the most attractive portions. She felt that he loved every part of her, physically and mentally.
Honey, I love you with all my heart, but if you don’t remove that picture of me off the ceiling you;re not going to be waking up to that in the mornings because I won’t be sleeping on the couch with you.
That’s why I painted a copy out in the living room.
She instantly could feel the rest of her extremities come alive with his statement and she immediately grabbed one of the pillows off of the bed and fired it in his direction. She was now wide awake.
Today, they were taking a trip to San Diego to attend a conference concerning religion in modern society. Conferences normally separated them during the summer months. She was constantly attending religious conferences while he attended those that dealt with human rights. This was a conference that suited both of them since this conference would conjoin the two topics.
She was a professor of religious studies at The Elyria State University. Her classes weren’t the typical religious studies one would normally expect. She dealt with all forms of beliefs. The University was encouraging about her courses because it attracted students from all over the world. Her program was controversial and that controversy brought in money to the school. She also found the topics to be exhilarating. She got to discuss topics on religion that as a child, she would have been grounded for. She was a Christian at heart, but her mind was open. She always felt that there was some sort of connection that all of the religions had. The principles were all the same. Nadia felt that in the end man would get the pieces to the puzzle that was void between people’s beliefs. Her parents were not entirely happy with her topics and the attention her program at the University garnered, but they took the same stance as the University and thought of the money it was bringing in. They would make subtle hints to her about her morality, but the glimmer of the designer watches she bought them for Christmas prevented them from hinting too much. Her biggest critic was the ghost of herself. In previous years, she was on her way to being an accomplished scientist until an unforeseen obstacle prevented her from completing her degree in the scientific field. During that time, she doubled as a Sunday school teacher for the local church. Her scientific self sometimes questioned the racy topics she discussed in her classes. Her religious persecuted her for letting herself entertain thoughts that stray from what she had known as the word of God. Despite the inner tug of war, her work satisfied her.
Tyson did you pack yet?
Nadia asked.
Did you pack yet?
Tyson responded with guilt.
Honey, do you think I would be asking you if you packed while I haven’t packed yet? Like I’m going to give you the opportunity to make jokes about me being a hypocrite on the plane?
That’s why I love you baby. You know me so well
So did you pack yet?
No, but it was on my mind.
Tyson ran his own foundation that benefited civil issues. He could never sit behind a desk and work a typical nine to five. He was extremely intelligent, but he always thought that doing anything in life in a typical fashion would be a waste of his individuality. His foundation fought for human rights throughout Lorain County. His organization established homeless shelters, parenting seminars for pregnant teens, and established animal sanctuaries in the County. He wasn’t an absolute resolution to all of Ohio’s problems, but he was a good start. Many of the citizens of Lorain County wanted him to run for public office. He declined on a regular basis not that he would become corrupt, but a corrupt system would prevent him from doing his duty. He was in a situation where he felt he could make the most impact. He wasn’t in a planning position, he was in a doing position. His free thinking mind was his gavel, the pavement and the forests were his board room. He would not rest until every human had a place to sleep, until there was no more abortion, and there were no more racial discrimination.
I’m so happy were going to a conference that is relevant to the both of us. I’m especially appreciative that your university is paying for it.
I’m happy too. It has been too long since the both of us have had a chance to go away together.
Nadia whirled around to look Tyson in his eyes.
Did you turn off the stove?
Yes dear.
Neighbors taking out the trash and getting the mail?
Yes, honey.
Did you call the cab to pick us up on time?
Yes, sugar dumpling.
Tyson, are you packed yet?
Well, are you packed yet?
Chapter 2
Nadia despised the security line at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Rather she despised the people that were in it. More specifically, she despised the people that managed to be efficient in the mornings and arrive at the airport just before she did, yet never ready to quickly check through security. She was always prepared for this. She never carried change in her pants, she had her laptop out, and made sure her cell phone was stationed to be scanned. The people that were ahead of her always held her back. She thought of the sweet Danish roll and cold orange juice she could be indulging in at that very moment if not for the sluggish people in front of her. As Nadia finally passed through security she felt just as much sadness for those that were behind her as the anger she felt toward those ahead of her. She was not the reason why she felt terribly sorry for the people behind her, but another reason that she had no control over despite her efforts. That’s when she heard the crash.
I am so sorry everyone. I seem to have dropped my change.
Nadia felt the pain of those standing behind her husband who unlike her was totally unprepared for security.
Tyson, why would you need change on an airplane?
The vending machines sweetheart.
As much as his inappropriate remarks seemed to come at the worst times, his attempts to escape the moment always seemed to coax the ends of her lips to curl into a covert smile. As much as certain nuances of his personality pissed her off at times, those same nuances sent a warm breeze through the inside of her body. His spontaneity is what made him irresistible. He was so naïve to the world, he used it as his playground. He used that very playground to display his love that he had for her. When they were dating, they would often take road trips to random areas of Ohio. At a truck stop, Tyson decided to buy Nadia a romantic card. Once he discovered that the rest stop only carried obscene cards, he decided to improvise. As Nadia sat in the car she noticed people hurrying out of the truck stop. She was astonished to see her boyfriend with nothing but a box around his pelvic region. The word LOVE was painted down the entire length of his right leg. On the left leg the word YOU was painted on the exact same way.
Nadia guess who loves you?
Nadia had no choice to quickly answer as she laughed hysterically.
I know you do, but please don’t remove that box with the answer.
The couple sat in their seats next to each other directly in the middle of the plane. Tyson always wanted to be seated in the middle to represent where he wanted to be in life. Tyson viewed a plane as a representation of the rat race of mankind. Everyone wanted to ride in the front where first class passengers are seated. First class is exclusive to only the few people that can actually afford to fly in luxury. There is a curtain that does not divide the first class from the rest of the passengers on the plane, but to blind the first class passengers from the realities of an economy class flight. The seats were by far too small, and the food was not as desirable. If one passenger decided to recline his or her seat, that person could hear the intense breathing of the angry passenger directly behind that seat. Despite the fact that economy was listed as one class, it wasn’t. Money wasn’t the dividing factor but location was. The passengers that sat farthest in the back had to wait the longest for service. If the aircraft were to go down, they were the farthest from the exits. The only benefit that people seated in the rear had was the easiest access to the restroom facilities. That was more of a burden because of the grotesque smell that emitted from the room and the constant migration of people that would end up congregating in their small section of the aircraft. The true middle of the airplane represented the true middle class of society. They were a group of people that longed to sit in first class, but wanted no part of the back of the plane unless it was to use the facilities. Nadia always enjoyed the middle for one sole purpose. They would be the closest to the emergency exits just in case if something went wrong.
The movie that was shown on the flight was one of Nadia and Tyson’s most cherished movies. It was
