image-placeholderNote to Readers
image-placeholderWhatever the reason you picked up this book, you're going to love it here! Note though, consistent work is needed to yield the fruit you deserve. Nothing of value comes easy, and if it does, you won't keep it for long. Doing this work can also be fun and invigorating, especially when you realize you deserve this.
You may notice your friendships, and other relationships, shift and change as you read and begin to Till the Soil (see Section 1). This is a necessary part of the process. You may begin to feel uncomfortable as you understand the dynamics of your relationships and desire change. Your emerging authentic self will gravitate toward relationships balanced with reciprocity, genuine intimacy, and love. You will crave time alone to enjoy your own company and become more secure in affirming your boundaries.
This book will provide many epiphanies. You will understand how who and what you surround yourself with directly effects your own motivation and potential Vibrancy. Your self-confidence will strengthen when practical tips and exercises are developed and implemented with fervor. You will find self-love is illuminated and magnified when acceptance is no longer optional for the being you are, and essentially always have been.
Introduction
Fruited. The word sounded good, but I had to consult the dictionary for the definition. Oxford Language defines Fruited as producing fruit.¹ The Fruited Life then, is a lifestyle full of evidence of fruitfulness.
COVID stretched, scarred, broke, and rebirthed a lot of us. Needing to focus my energy and efforts on something outside of myself, my mind grasped a hold of planting, revealing the green thumb I didn't know I had. August of 2020 I was cutting an apple for my youngest child. Here's the thing, I very rarely cut apples. My kids and I usually just eat them to the core and toss them. The apple I cut into had a sprouting seed. With coffee grounds, soil, and time I decided to plant it. Within days the seedling was sprouting above the soil. And it kept growing.
This got me thinking about the stages of growth and change plants, specifically fruit, go through. A seed cannot go through what it needs to unless the soil is fertile. Fertile Soil allows the seed to crack and grow Roots. The Roots serve as anchors to handle the sprouts of the plant above the soil. The Sprouting gives way to the evidence of fruit by way of Blooming, sometimes into a flower, or a tiny version of the fruit. Then fruiting happens, ripens, and can be enjoyed.
And such is life.
We often enter seasons of our lives where we get fed up with living a dull, dusty, muted version of who we know we are. The phases of making sustainable changes, Soil², Root³, Sprout⁴, Bloom⁵, Fruited and Vibrancy⁶, are not easy, but absolutely necessary to be in full acceptance of the people we deserve to be.
Soil is your immediate surroundings; the things around you regularly. These are habits, routines, patterns of behavior and relationships you engage in. In this phase there may be a general level of dissatisfaction. Work, home life, and personal relationships may be lacking in intimacy, reciprocity, and warmth. You have the desire for more but are not quite sure how to make more
happen.
Root involves the strengthening and deepening of values, hopes and expectations. Rooting entails a level of discomfort that will persist as we arrive at the changes we want to make.
Sprout happens when we have held strong to the changes we want to make and begin to see the proof of those efforts. Expect some real vulnerability here. New behaviors are practiced, and we may begin to receive compliments, or feedback from others who may have noticed we are acting differently.
Bloom entails the process of confidence built. We may begin to feel pretty full of ourselves here. This is a warm and inviting place to be, but we may quickly forget and abandon the work we put in to get here.
Fruited is joy spreading. You see the steady fruits of the consistent work you have done with changing unhealthy relationship dynamics, correcting unfruitful habits, and implementing firm boundaries with yourself and others. Here, it is hard to be shaken by things that used to make you feel broken.
Vibrancy is the out loud, confident living of self-acceptance. Joy is pretty much a guarantee. Life is still life, and even though things may go awry, you feel a bigger plan is at play. This confidence and awareness causes you to make bold moves to secure the life you deserve.
You may have found this book in the Self-Help or Spiritual section of a bookstore or online. Yep, to both of those. This book is a guide to help you to understand you are
