About the Author
Prologue
Even at age four I was quite aware of my surroundings. A pivotal event unfolded while we were driving along the highway; we had just visited the Grand Canyon that day. All was going well; we were heading to South Dakota to visit Mount Rushmore. My sister and I were playing tic-tac-toe while riding in the back seat of the car. Feeling unsettled, like we were being watched, I turned and saw a black blur. I squinted, realizing it was a van with its headlights turned off. It was nearly midnight. Who would drive with their lights off? I turned back around trying to shake off the nervousness. I turned back around and tried to enjoy another game of tic-tac-toe; it was nearly impossible. I looked back; I could see the van was still trailing our car.
My sister offered me the board, but I shoved it off. I couldn’t focus. I looked out my window, and I spotted a guy standing by the road. He put something up to his mouth. He seemed to speak into it. That worried me. I turned to glance at the van that was following us, and it wasn’t there! Suddenly, something rammed into the front of the car on the driver’s side. We were forced off the road and into the side brush. My father couldn’t get his foot off the gas, so we were going through the brush. We ran into a tree. I looked around and saw that everyone was unconscious except me. I reached up and pulled out my dad’s phone… dead. I then pulled out my mom’s phone and dialed 911. Exhausted from the stress and barely conscious, I explained the situation as I welcomed the blanket of darkness that enveloped me.

Who am I
Ten years later.
My name is Carter Lake. I am a very unusual kid. I was born at exactly midnight on January 1, 2006, the start of the new year. Because I have this very specific time of birth, I have some special gifts, but I will tell you about those later. I am getting ahead of myself. I live in Yellowstone National Park because my parents just happen to be keepers of the park; so, that allows me to go anywhere I want. If you think that this story is going to be like all the other informational stories about Yellowstone, you are wrong. Anyway, I am 14 now, and I’m going to turn 15 in exactly 57 days.
As I said before, I was born exactly on the new year at midnight. Because this happening is so rare, or at least so specific, I have some special abilities. For one, I have been able to fend off any warrior that had been training with a sword and lance, since I was in diapers, and I have not had any training. Anyways, back to the present, I’m in school listening to my teachers teach about the human body. Do you know what it is like being the tallest and strongest person in your class, including the teacher?
Well, that is another of my abilities.
I have a perfectly toned body without trying, but I still like to work out and get stronger. Once the bell rang, I was out like a shot. As soon as I got home my parents started cowering. They think that I am a demon or an alien. My biological parents died in a car crash, and these are my adoptive parents. Not wanting to freak them out, I went to my bedroom. I am a little bit of a perfectionist, so, I keep my bedroom spotless.
Today, I clipped on my guns and grabbed a couple of books along with my bow and arrows, then ran to my favorite thinking spot. It’s about three miles away with a pond and a thick canopy of trees. Getting there was easy because I could also run a mile in a minute. It only took me three minutes to get there. I left my bow and arrows in a little cave I found a few days ago, sat down, and looked outside. I saw a herd of elk go by; I tried to track them. To help me out in the wild, I also have incredible hearing, great eyesight, and an excellent sense of smell. Another advantage is that I have a brilliant memory, and I only need three hours of sleep a night. These two things alone tend to make me a good student.
Bored, I started walking home when about half a mile away. Motivated by the smell of my parents’ cooking, I sprinted home. It smelled like chicken with a slightly sweet smell. After dinner, I
