Trail Therapy

Some people describe a single moment when it hits them that they aren’t participating in their own life anymore. I had that moment for five years, with no end in sight. It played out in front of me like a movie on a screen. I found myself in a scary relationship that completely consumed me: emotional abuse, controlling behavior, getting things thrown at me, losing friends and family and every ounce of confidence I had. It became the life I thought I deserved. I couldn’t leave—no matter what I knew was best. No matter what anyone who loved me told me. This was my narrative.
