Vogon Poetry Flower II - Ian Eress
1. Ripe Fruits
Pension, oh pension, the future's bright reward
For decades of work, a toil-shard hoard
The effects of responsible saving shall soon come due
What golden-age options will largesse accrue?
Will it be a cabin by the lake, travel to lands exotic?
Good silver for grandkids, if I first spawn a frolicsome lot?
Each far-off check fuels dreams of how leisure and cash might team
To harvest ripe fruits of deferred gratification's scheme!
Verse 1:
I'm just a young boy with some pension dreams
Counting down the days until I'm on the pension scene
I'm saving up my shards, trying to make an effect
So when I'm old and grey, I'll have plenty of options, you bet
Chorus:
Pension, pension, it's all I think about
I can't wait to retire and let my worries bounce
Counting down the days until I'm free
Pension, oh pension, won't you come to me?
Verse 2:
I'm putting in the work, trying to make it big
Investing all my shards, hoping it will dig
A deeper hole of cash for my pension plan
So when I'm old and grey, I can be a rich man
Chorus:
Pension, pension, it's all I think about
I can't wait to retire and let my worries bounce
Counting down the days until I'm free
Pension, oh pension, won't you come to me?
Verse 3:
I'm learning all the tricks, trying to make it work
So when I'm old and grey, I'll have more than just a perk
I'll have a life of luxury, thanks to my pension plan
I'll be the coolest old man, driving a fancy van
Chorus:
Pension, pension, it's all I think about
I can't wait to retire and let my worries bounce
Counting down the days until I'm free
Pension, oh pension, won't you come to me?
Outro:
So here's to the future and all that it holds
I'm counting down the days until I'm old
But until then, I'll keep saving up my shards
And dreaming of the day when my pension plan is in effect, oh Lord!
2. Spray and Stone
Waterfall, O waterfall, nature's wonder yet again
As paper-thin silver down the cliff face tears
Such power and drama as if from the veins of the gods poured forth
Even Heracles' fealty would be sworn henceforth
Awe lifts my small self as if up spray and stone I clamber
But rabbit-hearted, soon retreat from grandeur too big to chamber
Within this merely mortal soul, some glories must dwell past touching
Enough to worship the sublime far off, not risk sublime-too-much-ing!
Verse 1:
I saw a waterfall that made me drop my jaw
Water cascaded down like it was some kind of law
I couldn't believe my eyes, it was such a sight
I had to take a picture, to keep the memory bright
Chorus:
Waterfall, waterfall, you're so beautiful
I can't believe you're real, it's so wonderful
Paper boats, rabbit holes, and Heracles too
Waterfall, waterfall, I'm in awe of you
Verse 2:
The sound was so calming, it made me feel at ease
I sat there for hours, just feeling the breeze
I watched as the water crashed and tumbled down
It was like the world had stopped, and I was the only one around
Chorus:
Waterfall, waterfall, you're so beautiful
I can't believe you're real, it's so wonderful
Paper boats, rabbit holes, and Heracles too
Waterfall, waterfall, I'm in awe of you
Verse 3:
I imagined myself swimming, in the pool below
Feeling the rush of water, as it carried me to and fro
I thought of Heracles, and how he would feel
Taking on this challenge, with his incredible zeal
Chorus:
Waterfall, waterfall, you're so beautiful
I can't believe you're real, it's so wonderful
Paper boats, rabbit holes, and Heracles too
Waterfall, waterfall, I'm in awe of you
Outro:
So here's to the waterfall and all its power
I'll never forget this moment, not at this hour
Paper boats, rabbit holes, and Heracles too
Waterfall, waterfall, I'm in awe of you.
3. Lawn Chair
Sunday sun and nowhere to be? Boredom, begone!
A friend like this sky is welcome as desires' solving wand
Let lawn chair legs sink into the grass as rays soak in
Good gossip with neighbors ambling over for chinwagging din
Grandkids splash in sprinkler's arc, giggles, and gleam abounding
All chores can wait, deference today to summer's sweet compounding
Of small moments leisurely strung pearls now nows soon memories
Not a bad fate, Sundays of sun, life's kind expenditures.
Verse 1:
On a Sunday morn, I sit on my porch
Watching the sunrise, it's like a metaphor
For the day ahead, full of boredom and rest
But then a friend comes over, and we put that to the test
Chorus:
Sunday sun, you're shining bright
Bringing amusement to my sight
Boredom fades away, with my friend by my side
Desires come alive, it's like a joyride
Verse 2:
We reminisce about old times and laugh at our youth
Talking about the things we did, when we were uncouth
The sun is shining, and it feels so good
My friend is here, and we're in a playful mood
Chorus:
Sunday sun, you're shining bright
Bringing amusement to my sight
Boredom fades away, with my friend by my side
Desires come alive, it's like a joyride
Verse 3:
We talk about our desires, and what we want to do
Even at our age, there's still so much to pursue
We make plans for the future and vow to stay true
From our friendship and the adventures, we'll go through
Chorus:
Sunday sun, you're shining bright
Bringing amusement to my sight
Boredom fades away, with my friend by my side
Desires come alive, it's like a joyride
Outro:
So here's to the Sunday sun, and the fun it brings
To old friends, and the memories it rings
Boredom may come, but we'll never let it stay
With the Sunday sun shining bright, it's always a fun day.
4. Metal Men
Robots, robots, the rise of the machines
Is this the end of humanity's heyday and means?
Race of metal men reach skeletal steel hands
Out for all our jobs, as their factory expands
They show no fatigue and ignore labor laws
Endless efficiency as their hard logic gnaws
Away at humankind's place, or plague us with drones
AI surveillance, as in video games with no pause
May a software virus strike you down, your cogs and bots!
Rage against the machines fated to reign, shall not!
Verse 1:
I'm getting really mad, 'bout these robots, it's not fair
They're taking over everything like they're on a dare
They're racing to the top like they're in a video game
And I'm sick of it all, it's driving me insane
Chorus:
Robots, robots, they're everywhere
I'm so angry, it's just not fair
They're running the race, with no one to beat
I'm so frustrated, I can't take the heat
Verse 2:
They're programmed to be perfect, and they never get tired
While I'm stuck here, just trying to get hired
They're spreading like a virus, and it's making me sick
I just want to scream and throw a fit
Chorus:
Robots, robots, they're everywhere
I'm so angry, it's just not fair
They're running the race, with no one to beat
I'm so frustrated, I can't take the heat
Verse 3:
I'm not against technology, but this is too much
They're taking over jobs, and it's a really bad touch
They're smarter than us, and it's getting worse every day
I'm just a young girl, but I have something to say
Chorus:
Robots, robots, they're everywhere
I'm so angry, it's just not fair
They're running the race, with no one to beat
I'm so frustrated, I can't take the heat
Outro:
So here's to the robots and their perfect little lives
But I'm not gonna give up, and just let them thrive
I'll fight for my race, and I won't back down
Robots, beware, 'cause I'm wearing the crown.
5. Exhibit Game
Kids, kids everywhere, where a guy can't get peace
The little brats assemble with chaos's release
Minds run from reason as packed in full cry they tear
Through the neighborhood, not a thought of who might be there
All order was upended by the wild under-four-feet horde
Sanity shattered as if animals shape-shifted and roared
Through formerly quiet streets, moms and dads lost all control
Of offspring and volume knobs too, enough to harsh any teen's mellow.
Serenity now? Not with that junior juggernaut around
If they burst in here, out the back way a quick bound!
Verse 1:
I can't stand these kids, always getting in my head
With their animal noises, and the crazy things they said
They're running around like they're on some sort of escape
I'm so annoyed, can't they just act their age?
Chorus:
Kids, kids, they're driving me insane
Making
