Show Outline:
Life Plans are like gym memberships. Many people will join the gym, pay the deposit, pay the monthly dues, but never actually go to the gym to use the equipment to get in better shape.
There are many reasons people do not follow through and take the actions necessary to create the life of their dreams.
The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, is a MUST READ book that deals with this very issue.
It is a book about a boy who discovers his "personal legend" and sets off to achieve it. Along the way, he has doubts, hardships, victories, comes to a great place and almost stops there, etc.
Quotes from The Alchemist:
…everyone believes the world's greatest lie. It's this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie.
It's what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young knows what their destiny is. At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their destiny.
When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it
The problem is that most people want safety, comfort and to not be afraid, to just keep things as they are--and that's usually what they get...
Your fear of regret must be greater than your fear of failure in order to achieve your dreams.
...before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we've learned as we've moved toward that dream. That's the point at which most people give up. It's the point at which, as we say in the language of the desert, one 'dies of thirst just when the palm trees have appeared on the horizon.'
...you're different from me, because you want to realize your dreams. I just want to dream... I'm afraid it will all be a disappointment, so I prefer to just dream about it.
Do you want to realize your dreams, or do you simply want to dream about your dreams?
Well, what if I decide to stay? …Let me tell you what will happen. You'll be the counselor of the oasis …You'll marry Fatima, and you'll both be happy for a year…. And you'll get better and better at understanding omens, because the desert is the best teacher there is…. Sometime during the second year, you'll remember about the treasure. The omens will begin insistently to speak of it, and you'll try to ignore them…During the third year, the omens will continue to speak of your treasure and your destiny. You'll walk around, night after night, at the oasis, and Fatima will be unhappy because she'll feel it was she who interrupted your quest. But you will love her, and she'll return your love… So you won't blame her. But many times you'll walk the sands of the desert, thinking that maybe you could have left… that you could have trusted more in your love for Fatima. Because what kept your at the oasis was your own fear that you might never come back. At that point, the omens will tell you that your treasure is buried forever…. Then, sometime during the fourth year, the omens will abandon you, because you've stopped listening to them.
