About this ebook

Maybe there is a single impenetrable mystery at the heart of all things. We are more than a bag of particles governed by the laws of physics. How do these particles create happiness? How can an understanding of these particles develop into an understanding of consciousness or God?

There is a God - Thomas Romano

    INTRODUCTION

There is a God. My mother used those four words many times when I was growing up when her attempts at scolding me to change my behavior did not result in the desired effect she was seeking. Those very words had a profound effect on me much later in life, particularly regarding writing this book. My mother believed deeply in God even though she did not practice a religion or attend church. Recently, coinciding with advances in physics and cosmology, numerous scientists (and others) flat-out reject the notion that there is a God. I am a scientist who has chosen a different viewpoint about God. It turns out that God does exist, although He has only existed for the past ten to twenty thousand years or so. That time coincides with the appearance of modern Homo sapiens. That will be the focus of this book. Man has created numerous Gods. Just look at Egypt, Greece, and Rome to see proof of that. I will describe many Gods, each unique to a specific religion and time, all created by man, within the past 20,000 years.

It is accepted that the Universe is 13.8 billion years old. It came into existence after the Big Bang. That term is a misnomer. It is more like a spring being compressed and then released. There was no explosion. Stephen Hawking very successfully argued that before the Big Bang, there was no time and no space. There was no before. God could not have existed to create the Universe. The Universe arose following a spontaneous, random quantum fluctuation creating a singularity, a point of infinite density and extreme heat in a space much smaller than that of a proton.

Lawrence Krauss’s book, "A Universe from Nothing" very elegantly explains how this could have happened. The Universe has been expanding (due to inflation) and cooling ever since. I will have a lot more to say about inflation as it creates the possibility of many universes.

One of the mysteries of this creation event has always puzzled me. If God did create the Universe, then what did He do for the next 13.8 billion years? This, I believe, would be serious downtime that might even challenge God. Virtually, all the religions of the world state that God (or some other divine being) created the Universe. For that to have happened, then God had to exist before the Big Bang. Stephen Hawking showed that that was not possible as there was no before. The Catholic Church’s answer to that is God is eternal. Many other religions share that same viewpoint. Eternal implies time which did not exist before the Big Bang. Indeed, how, and when was God created? If He was created before the Big Bang or if He was created 20,00 years ago (my hypothesis), the methodology for that creation event should have occurred similarly. In other words, if God was created at least 13.8 billion years ago, or if God was created 20,000 years ago, that creation event would be identical. It is highly likely that we would have the same God. God’s concern for man, His love for man would be the same. In all my research for this book, there is no consensus as to how God came into existence. With my version of God, God would discover the already existing Universe and the planet Earth along with man. I believe that God could get up to speed very quickly. One of His first tasks would be to give each man a soul. The population of humans at that time is estimated to be between one and five million. God would begin communicating with man. Man is reaching out to God at the same time. This occurred at a very fortuitous crossroad. Modern man and modern God are reaching out to each other.

What I hope to show is that God did not have to create the Universe, life, and man to be truly relevant today. My point of view is as follows: If you do not believe that God created the Universe, then that does not necessarily make you an atheist. I believe in this more modern God. I am comfortable being a scientist with the belief that God is out there. When I use the word God, I am referring to multiple different Gods, associated with major religions: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. I tried to create one God for all religions but was unable to do so. When I refer to God, I do describe Him /Her as a male. There is no reason that a female God could not exist. However, Abraham, Siddhartha, Jesus of Nazareth, and Muhammad were males. For Hinduism, there are multiple Gods. Brahman is the Creator of the entire cosmic universe. Vishnu is the Sustainer (Preserver). Shiva is the Destroyer and Reincarnator. Their feminine counterparts are Saraswati, the wife of Brahman, Lakshmi, the wife of Vishnu, and Parvati, the wife of Shiva.

The book’s initial chapters will describe the origin of the Universe, the origin of life and the origin of man. One of man’s greatest quests is to try to discover other intelligent beings and civilizations. It is looking increasingly likely that life did exist/exists on Mars. Promising discoveries on Enceladus (one of Saturn’s moons) and Europa (one of Jupiter’s moons) suggest that life will be found there as well. Liquid water is abundant on those moons. Indeed, life should be common in such a large universe with so many stars and rocky planets in the so-called Goldilocks zone. In the final chapters, I will be exploring consciousness that is present in the Universe and the role (especially important) for God in it. Indeed, I will try to show what God, quantum
