In Search of the Truth
Introduction
From the earliest days of my life, I have always had a keen interest in what was going in the world and why. That interest included what I could see and experience directly, read about, and watch on TV. Now, of course, I need to add what is present online. I remember as a nine-year-old watching the Republican and Democratic presidential nominating conventions on NBC News in 1956! My Dad got the New York Daily News delivered to our house which I always read from cover to cover. By the way, I miss reading the Sunday newspaper; however, I must admit that the internet has way more content. What I am going to do in this book is to recap many of the major events from the 1950’s to present. I was born in 1947. This will not be an autobiography, but rather it will describe how these events affected me. There will be some personal content as well. There was a TV Show that began in 1993, known as the X-Files. It aired from 1993 to well into the 2000’s. Chris Carter was the creative genius of that series and contributed much of its content. He always closed the opening credits with the mantra: The truth is out there
. I have an X-Files coffee mug on my desk at work with that mantra that I see daily. That coffee mug was the first item that I bought online in 1994! That inspired the title for this book. My own personal mantra is: To leave this place a little bit better off than the way that I found it
.
The chapters will include the influence the Catholic Church had on me during my childhood and teenage years. Next will come the Kennedy assassination. It will not be an exhaustive review but will include some aspects that I believe are of interest. Then I will discuss the Vietnam War. Again, it will not be a thorough review, but I will dive into the controversy of napalm and Agent Orange. Watergate will not be discussed because we have the truth. The sad thing is that Richard Nixon wanted so much to be re-elected president, that he felt he had to cheat to do it. Doesn’t that sound familiar? His democratic opponent, George McGovern, only carried one state-Massachusetts (great trivia question). It was a colossal landslide. In Chapter Four, I will discuss something that was just reported regarding whether former Governor John Connally of Texas may have stalled the release of 52 American hostages in Teheran, Iran, in 1980 to help Ronal Reagan win the presidential election over Jimmy Carter. Next, I will discuss the Iran-Contra affair. This is of particular interest since numerous laws were broken but there was little mention of impeaching President Reagan. Chapter Six will describe another news item that is extremely current regarding the Central Park Jogger Case that may represent a turning point in the epic legal clash of Alvin
