About this ebook

This first book of a two-book set explores the nature and perfection of the One we call God, to get to know more clearly Who God is, and why God is so important to us and to the eternal happiness He has prepared for us. I wrote this book to present the revelations of Jesus Christ and the Church’s teachings on the mysteries of God’s self-existence and absolute perfection in hope of attaining and passing on a deeper, more mature appreciation of God’s infinite perfection, so that we may come to the realization that, by refusing to impose our human limitations on God, we can improve immensely our relationship with Him in all aspects of our growth in Christian spirituality.

As Saint Paul stated in his first letter to the Corinthians (13:11-12), “When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things. At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known.”

In other words, as we grow beyond our childhood understandings and images of God, we must begin to know God in a way that is a foresight of how we will know God in the eternal afterlife: “fully, as I am fully known.” This adult understanding of Who God is will generate in us a faith and trust in God’s infinite being, power and love that will help us to increase our acceptance of God’s will for our lives, while enabling us to appreciate more fully God’s command that we love all others on this planet as we love ourselves.

The revelations about God in this book are not of my own discovery or invention. They are based on teachings revealed by Jesus, the Incarnate Word of God, Who became flesh and dwelt among the Israelites more than twenty centuries ago, then passed on to us through His Apostles in the New Testament, then by the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, and finally by the Magisterium of the Church for more than two thousand years.

    Acknowledgments

I wish to thank God for the following strong influences during my seminary studies: Father Ted Cirone, C.M.F., who patiently explained the intricacies of Thomistic philosophy in such a way as to inspire my efforts in this book forty-some years later; Father John Hampsch, C.M.F., whose enthusiastic lectures on cosmogony and cosmology created in me a lasting interest in God’s universe; and to Father Tom Mitchell, C.M.F., my high school Latin and Greek professor, who introduced me to ancient Greek philosophy which provided a foundation for Saint Thomas Aquinas’ approach to philosophy and theology. A special thanks, too, to Father. Roland E. Murphy, O.Carm., Professor of Sacred Scripture at Catholic University of America, who made the Bible come alive for me.

Most of all, I wish to thank God for the support of my beloved wife Mary Ann, and two of my seminary brothers, John Halligan and Raymond Szempruch, who encouraged me to use God’s gifts to write this book.

Introduction: An Adult Understanding of God

Have you seen the 2-hour series on PBS’ NOVA ScienceNOW, entitled Hunting the Edge of Space? It is amazing! It traces recent astronomical discoveries of various NASA space probes and the recently renovated Hubble space telescope into deep space way beyond our own galaxy in an effort to find remnants of the Big Bang, which may provide more visible clues as to how, when and where the universe began. So far, their technology has peered to a depth of fifteen billion light years (one light year equals 5.87 trillion miles!) — almost to the edge of the universe, which is expanding all the time!

For centuries, atomic and molecular physicists, too, have sought the truth about the origin of the universe and what caused it. The results of their research so far has taken them to within one one-hundreth of a second from the beginning of time, space, matter and energy. Earth-based and space-probe scientific explorations of twentieth and early twenty-first centuries have discovered evidence to support a theory about the beginning of the universe and its history from that point to the present time. Even now, scientists using the Large Hadron Collider at the European Centre for Nuclear Research under the French-Swiss border are striving to discover the Higgs
