I would like to dedicate this book to my inspiration—granddaughter, Gracie Marie Denton. She first came into my life at a month old when her dad brought her over. Then at twenty-two months old, she came to live with us; then at three years old, we made it official in court and became not just her grandparents but her conservatorial guardians. She has been with us ever since. It was hard at first; we had already raised our children and had an empty nest.
Looking back, I cannot imagine life now without her in it. She completes us. We go everywhere and do everything with her by our side.
Gracie was born with a very rare form of a heart condition that went undiagnosed until she was six years old when her heart stopped. She spent seventeen days in a children’s hospital. Again, at eleven, she went into cardiac arrest twenty-eight days in the hospital, and now she has a defibrillator implanted. She is on medication several times throughout the day.
Through all this in her short life, she pushes on; she is strong and beautiful inside and out. She is God-fearing, sweet,
