    Preface

Over the years, several people had suggested that I write a book about my experiences in doing deliverance ministry. I began to pray about whether I should write a book or not. One night after I had just finished praying, I was lying in bed thinking about this when the Lord spoke to me and said, "The name of the book will be In the Hands of the Enemy."

Scripture says we're in the hands of the enemy. Many of God's people today are held in bondage to curses, sickness, diseases, and infirmity. The good news is that Jesus gives us His power and authority to set the captive free.

    Jesus said,

The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. (Luke 4:18–19 NIV)

So He saved them from the hand of the one who hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. (Psalm 106:10 NASB)

A few years ago, we had a ministry team here. The director wanted me to share some of my experiences, so I began to speak about some of the things that Vicki and I and our family had experienced over the years. One teenage girl was absolutely shocked. She told me she thought the demonic was only in movies and not in real life.

Here in America, we have a Western-world mindset that teaches that most of our problems are mental, physical, or emotional, but not spiritual. We are taught this ideology, which actually is contrary to the Scripture. I believe that third-world churches that deal with the demonic are actually a lot closer to the truth of the Scripture than we are in the Western world.

My hope in writing this book is to open the eyes of people who know little or nothing about this subject. In this book, I will share some of our experiences over the years and what we have learned as we have done deliverance ministry.

    Introduction

Within the church, when we speak of the spiritual, we think mainly of our salvation, our continued growth and walk with Jesus, or how we can do ministry for Him. All of this is a great blessing, but within the church, we forget there are demonic forces that need to be dealt with. Many in the church are intimidated by this aspect of ministry. I believe this to be true mainly because of not understanding how to use spiritual warfare against the demonic. Spiritual warfare is rejected by many, causing an inability to minister effectively within the church. Thankfully, more people are beginning to see and understand what is happening in the spiritual realm.

Many people today have been involved in occult practices, witchcraft, New Age, drugs, sex, and have generational curses in their lives. They need to be delivered from the demonic spirits that they have been exposed to. You can watch many of their testimonies on YouTube.

My hope is that this book may give some understanding to what many people are encountering in the church, as well as outside the church. Jesus has given us as Christians His authority to come against all the forces of darkness. He says that nothing, by any means, shall hurt us. This should give us the boldness we need in ministering to the people who are being held in the hands of the enemy.

This is a quote from Peter J. Horrobin's book Healing Through Deliverance

Many misconceptions, and the lack of good teaching, have kept much of the Church ignorant of the enemy's devices, in total contrast to the policy adopted and recommended by Paul: in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes (2 Corinthians 2:11 NIV). Within the Church it has been popularly assumed that evil spirits are only very occasionally encountered and that there is no way they could possibly affect believing Christians. The Church, therefore, has been seduced into deception and error by believing that deliverance from evil spirits is not a ministry worthy of any attention in the average church.¹

    Chapter 1

    My Call to Ministry

And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.

    —Acts 4:29–30 (NLT)

I said, Demons in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the true and living Son of the Most High God, I command you to leave and never come back. I felt them leave, and as they left, fear left my body. This was the first time God really showed me His power over the enemy. I'll share the rest of this in a moment; here is how it all started.

Early on a Saturday morning, I was sitting at the kitchen table reading in the book of Acts. My wife and children were still in bed. I had just read Acts 4:29–30 (NLT),

And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.

Suddenly, I saw a vision of Christ's hand stretched out toward me with the sleeve rolled up. My eyes were open when I saw this, and it startled me. I shut the Bible and went back to bed, pondering what I had just seen.

The next day, Sunday, while I was at church, I felt the Lord impressing me very strongly to go pray. I went back to a vacant Sunday school room. I didn't know what to pray about, so I just prayed about everything that came to mind; and as I was praying with my eyes closed, I saw another vision. I saw two hands touching together with both of the palms facing up. The hands had giant holes in each palm; the holes were so large the entire palm was almost gone. This time, I was more curious about what the vision meant.

The next day at work, as I was driving a forklift loading trucks, I was praying, Lord, what do the hands mean? As I started to enter a truck to load it, the Lord spoke to me audibly and said, Believe. Needless to say, I was very surprised.

This was the first inkling I had that maybe God was calling me to preach. Later, I spoke to my dad about it, and he said, No, God would not call you to preach because you were too much like me. God had previously spoken to him and said He didn't want dad behind the pulpit. So I just let it go.

A few months later, our church was preparing for revival services with retired District Superintendent Dr. Ross Lee. Our church wanted to have a twenty-four-hour prayer coverage before the revival started and scheduled each person to take a thirty-minute time slot to pray for the revival services.

The day the revival was to start, I was at work, talking to some of the guys. When I closed my eyes for a couple of seconds, I saw a vision of a set of jumbo jet tires. It surprised me, and I had no idea what it meant. I went back to my own department and continued working. I saw another vision of a pair of roller skate wheels, the old metal kind that hooks onto your shoes. I had no idea what that meant either.

My time slot to pray for the revival was after work not too long before revival service started. Kneeling beside the bed praying for revival, I saw another vision that looked like a hubcap just kind of rotating in the air. Again, I had no clue what it meant. That night, as Dr. Lee stood up
