"The feed cut off, and I looked at Will.  Mom’s not coming back, is she? She’s a woman of principle. She won’t let convicts come to Mars. But they just dismissed her, and she’s stuck on Earth...which means, I won’t be able to see her again, will I...

Not if we can help it, Will said.  Want to see what Old Earth looks like in person?  Me too.

How are we going to get to Earth? I asked.

How soon can we fix up this ship and fly it back? Will said.  Looks to me, it’s still in good shape.  Only needs some cleaning up to do.

You’re crazy, I said.

They said I don’t think like other people, Will said.  And that’s true. But so what.  I don’t live for other people.  And if my girl wants to see her mother again, she’s going to see her mother again.

I happen to know all about flying ships, I said.  I spent years just studying everything about it.  Mechanical engineering too. 

Good, Will said.  Between us two...Survivors...New Earth pioneers...we could do anything.  We’ll get this ship ready soon, and we’ll take the trip of a lifetime...back to Old Earth.

I walked with Will all over the ship, working on each part, renovating rooms, and bringing the ship back in order again.  We even brought Will’s plants and animals from the Farm to the ship.

Then we managed to bring most of Will’s house into the Landing before we finally launched the Landing.  It took a little over a month, but we had a purpose.  We had a new mission.  To find Mom and to save Old Earth from the Monsters.

We would finally spend some time with each other.  It would be a couple of years before we land on Earth. We had all our favorite collections of films, videos, games, and books to keep us busy...along with each other. We were also mapping out where we wanted to visit on Old Earth.

Hopefully, there will still be an Old Earth.  Despite having fought off the Monsters, I was still worried.  The way they manipulated the Raider’s dead body and taken over Mary, who was a robot and shouldn’t have been affected by them, I was worried that the Monsters had found another way to destroy humans.  Since there weren’t any humans on New Earth now that Will and I had left.   The Monsters will be all over Old Earth.  This time with more knowledge to destroy humankind, and more resistance. 

God help us when we get to Old Earth.

1st Week on Red Genesis

Will had suggested that we hibernate part of the time on our way back to Old Earth so the trip wouldn’t seem as long. We estimated it would take at least 3 to 4 years to get to Old Earth from New Earth, which can seem like a long time on a ship. It was how long it took for my mother, Jana Gee, to make the trip from New Earth back to Old Earth, which explained why she was gone for so long.

What? Bored with me already? I joked.

Never, Will said, leaning over to kiss my cheek. I’ll never get bored with you. He smiled. You know how many years I’ve lived on New Earth thinking my parents and I were the last humans in existence? Almost all my life. Then when my parents died, I thought I was the only human left so when you showed up, Evie, I thought you weren’t real at first. I thought I was dreaming. You have no idea how lonely it could get.

Um, really? I asked, raising my eyebrows.

Oh, sorry, Will said, I wasn’t thinking. I know you were also living on New Earth, isolated...

I grew up thinking New Earth was just occupied by myself and my mother, the only survivors from Old Earth, I said. If that isn’t lonely, I don’t know what is.

It could be worse, Will said, always on the positive side. If you didn’t have your mother and then Mary, your robot-sister, you would have been truly alone before you found me.

And if you didn’t have your farm in the cave along with your animals...

Which are onboard the Red Genesis with us now, Will said.

The animals! I cried out. They will need us to be awake on the trip back to Old Earth, I said. We can’t go into hibernation mode.

But it would cut down on the food and supplies we need onboard, Will said. By the two of us staying awake the entire trip, we would require more food and water than we have...

Someone has to be awake to take care of the animals and the ship, I said. And before you volunteer yourself to stay awake, Will, let me tell you that I already know a lot about how to run this ship. I found a log of the ship and mechanical manual in my mother’s quarters, I said.  Mom was the Chief Engineer on this ship and sorta a right hand person for my father, who became Commander of the Red Genesis.

So you have it in your bloodline to run the Red Genesis? Will smirked.

No, it’s not that, I said. It’s because I want to study as much as possible on everything I need to know on how to run this ship, on what to expect on Old Earth, and on that organization Mom was working for. I gave a big sigh before I went on. Will, there is a lot of stuff I need to know before we get back to Old Earth, and I want to be prepared.

Will nodded and said, I know you probably couldn’t sleep at all, and certainly not peacefully, if you have all these things on your mind.

No, I said, not a wink. I don’t think three to four years even isn’t enough time to get as much as I want done.

Will laughed this time before pulling me into his arms, Rome wasn’t built in one day, you know, Evie. Take it one day at a time, and it will get done.

So you won’t be angry if I’m still awake while you go into hibernation? I asked.

Will stretched his arms and said, Not at all, but I would be angry to sleep through this fantastic journey without having spent time with you. Tell you what, he said smiling into my face, "I’ll help you take care of the animals and teach you everything I know about raising livestock, farming, and medicine before I go into hibernation.
