    PROLOGUE

Long, long ago there was an evil monster who ruled over all the universes in every time and space. In total there were five universes, but in the end the bravest warriors from every universe banded together to stop him. They were called the Time Lifters. The evil monster was imprisoned in the dark cell, which was a special kind of dark matter that could trap anyone in any time. The dark cell used so much dark matter that it could contain even the strongest of species. At the high point of the war, they all thought hope was lost and everyone everywhere was either going to die or be ruled forever and be his slaves, so every one of these Time Lifters created plans to save their kids from the impending doom. Whether they shipped their kids far off from the battle site or whatever they did, the Time Lifters made sure that their kids were safe. The greatest scientists from across all the universes came together and created the dark cell, and they created it just in time. They used it to trap the monster, but in return for trapping this monster, every one of these Time Lifters had to give his or her life essence to power the cell, and they all died. They all thought this mighty foe would be forever trapped, but little did they know they were wrong. Deep down they all had thought that it could possibly fail. That was why they sent their kids away. He returned one thousand years later, and he was ready to get his revenge. All the Time Lifters were now gone, and it was up to the last living members of their bloodlines, whoever they might be, to end this once and for all. Could they band together in time to stop this mighty foe?

Somewhere very far off on a distant planet isolated from all the rest in their universe, there were two people who didn’t know that their lives were going to change in ways most people couldn’t imagine. Would they one day bring together all the last living members of the Time Lifters and stop this evil? Who knows, but for now they must find it in themselves to understand their purposes in life, and that is where this long, long adventure will begin.

    CHAPTER 1

    UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

Alice! Alice! Alice, where are you? Rob yelled.

I’m in here, Rob. Quit your yelling, Alice answered.

As Rob walked into the living room, he saw Alice sitting there just looking out the window and watching the rain fall with this curious look on her face. He then began to think that he already knew the answer to his next question but asked it anyways.

What are you doing? asked Rob.

I’m sitting here thinking of ways off this planet to get away from you and your stupid questions, she said with a sarcastic tone to her voice.

    Really? Rob asked, confused.

No, not really. I’m just watching the rain fall, she replied

Oh! My bad, I took you serious, Rob said happily.

What Rob didn’t know was she was actually thinking about something; it just wasn’t that. She sat there and wondered if this was going to be their whole life. All they did was stay home and play games, watch TV, and have fun, but they didn’t do anything to better themselves or to have a life outside the house. When they were five and seven years old, they were put into cryosleep pods and shipped off to a planet with an environment as close to Earth’s as possible. But they had no idea where they were. All they knew was it was called Zap. It was named for its bad lightning storm season that happened once a year around April.

Their last memories of their parents were not great ones. One day their parents were heading out on patrol of their sector, and that was when the evil monster showed up, and they had to go fight. With all that chaos they were shipped out in their cryo pods for their safety because their parents feared that this battle might be the end for them and they didn’t want their kids to see them fail and die. They also wanted them to have a life without all this hurt and pain. A better life, a peaceful one.

It took them nine hundred years to get to this planet. They were slowly adrift in space for all this time. When they landed, it took another eighty-five years for someone to even find them and take them out of cryosleep. They were found by an older gentleman named Stevens, Jacob Stevens. He was a retired scientist and became known as an outsider because his theories were not always welcomed by most people. He was a longtime friend of the family and was left a note for them that had instructions to their house they live in today. They also had been given all the money, food, and things to do that they would ever need in their life, but Alice wanted something more out of her life than this.

It had been fifteen years since they landed and woke up but had done nothing but live a life of carefree nothingness. Today is Alice’s twentieth birthday, and she is sick of doing nothing with her life, not knowing it will all change soon anyways.

Alice, what’s up? You look like you’re thinking really hard about something. Is something the matter? Rob asked.

Alice turned and looked at Rob and paused as if scared to ask this question, not knowing what would come next.

Rob. Do you get the feeling that there is something more to our lives than this? Like we were meant for more. Not just having a carefree life. Don’t get me wrong, I know it is what our parents wanted for us, but I want more. Haven’t you ever wanted to be just like Mom and Dad and save the world from bad threats? Alice asked.

Rob stood there for a minute thinking, then turned to Alice and said, You know, I have not really given it any major thought. But why are you so worried all of a sudden?

I don’t know … I mean I have been thinking about it a lot recently, and I don’t know why. I just feel that something is going to happen. We’ve been living with no problems for a long time, it’s just not natural. Everybody has problems from time to time, but not us, she said with a questioning smile on her face.

Maybe we’re just both really, really lucky, he replied

I doubt it. There is no way we have been lucky for fifteen years. You know what our parents did for a living and how they died. Being lucky doesn’t run in the family. It almost feels like we have been hidden in a remote and isolated corner of the universe from whatever bad had happened back then or the bad that is supposed to happen now, Alice said back to Rob in a serious voice.

Fine, fine, what are you proposing we do then? Rob said, also getting more serious.

I’m not sure, but maybe Jacob knows something, she said.

What? You mean Stevens. We haven’t talked to him in years, Rob said.

Yes! You have a better idea, then please tell me, she said, sounding like she was starting to get mad.

Well, damn, didn’t mean to upset you. Sorry, and no, I don’t have a better idea. So I guess we will go find him. What about your birthday though, don’t you want to celebrate first? Rob asked as if he almost forgot it altogether.

Hey, don’t worry about it. I’ll just consider this my present, and I can do without a celebration for one year, she replied.

Well, then what do I do with this? Rob said, pulling out a small box.

Well, I guess I’ll open it before we leave. Thank you, Alice said.

Alice took the box from Rob and opened it. Inside the box was a small bottle with a blue liquid in it. The liquid was the deepest blue you had ever seen. It even had a small glow to it. The bottle was on a chain necklace just big enough to fit around Alice’s neck.

Not sure what it was, Alice asked, Thanks, but what is it?

Well, I took one of the blue gems I found in this house and distilled its essence in that bottle and put it on a chain. You now have a one-of-a-kind Rob-made necklace. It’s nothing special. It is just for looks, it has no uses. I thought it would look good on you, Rob said.

Wow, this must have taken you forever. You’re the best brother ever, Alice said.

No problem, Rob said and then stood there with this puzzled look on his face.

"Rob, what’s up?’ Alice asked him.

Um … this is all fine and stuff, but how are we supposed to find him? ’Cause I have no idea. You? Rob replied, confused.

No, I never thought that far ahead. I didn’t think you would agree to this so easily. Well, we can just go ask around in the next town over and see if we can find a lead, she said, sounding like she was as clueless about this as Rob was.

Okay, that sounds fine. Just let me get our weapons out of the closet, Rob said, hurrying along.

    Wait, why? asked Alice.

Well, the next town is a few miles away, and there is giant forest between us and it. So better safe than sorry, Rob replied.

Rob then walked over and grabbed the necklace out of Alice’s hands and put it on her. He then walked over and grabbed their weapons out of the closet.

Oh, okay. I’m in the mood to kill some monsters anyway. Also, thanks for putting the necklace on me, it does look great, Alice said very excitedly.

So the two of them got their weapons and began to get ready to leave. Alice had a laser pistol that could fold out into a rifle or switch into laser sword mode, while Rob had a laser minigun that could turn the barrels into a long laser spear. All you had to do was take off the barrels and attach them together and bam laser spear. They had gotten to be very good with them over the years since their house had a fully stocked training room, so there was no need to worry about what monsters might attack on the way to town. Once they were ready, they set out on the adventure that lay in front of them waiting to be unfolded.

    CHAPTER 2

    A LITTLE TASTE OF

    ADVENTURE

It had been a few hours since they left the house, and finally they reached the beginning of the forest on the way to the nearest town.

Alice turned to Rob and seeing he had a map in his hands asked him, So what is the name of this town, and is there anything I should know about it?

It is called the Gutter, and I don’t know anything about this town just like you. Remember we know the same stuff, Rob said

That name doesn’t sound very pleasant. Well, I just figured you might know something because earlier you seem to know the area well enough, Alice said, waiting quietly for a response.

I only knew that stuff because I have a map, and I remember coming here as a kid. I might have a good memory of the surrounding area, but I’m still as clueless as you about this town called the Gutter, Rob said cautiously as if something was approaching.

Noticing Rob’s caution, Alice crouched down and walked slower but still turned and whispered to Rob, What is it? You sense something?

And before Rob could respond to Alice, out of the trees jumped a couple of squirrels. But before they knew what happened, Alice rained hell down on them with her pistol and killed both squirrels with a head shot instantly.

Rob, finally noticing what happened, turned to Alice and said, Nice shot, but you have to be more careful, what if that was another person?

Sorry, I just got a little spooked and wanted to kill something. At least we got something to eat, Alice replied in a calmer voice.

Rob walked over to the dead squirrels on the ground to pick them up, but before he did, he noticed they were both wearing these bandana-type collars around their neck and froze, but it was too late. There was a girl standing there with a laser knife around his neck. Alice got ready as if she was going to shoot her, but Rob said, Hey, hey, let’s not be so quick to slaughter everyone now, Alice, put it down. Now!

But she has a knife to your neck, Alice angrily replied.

It’s fine, we can talk this out. No need to kill everyone, Rob carefully said.

Alice lowered her weapon, and in doing so the other girl lowered her knife as well. She then fell to the ground and started crying.

The girls then started to scream through the tears. Those were my pets! What did you do to them!

Alice replied, They jumped out of the trees and spooked the hell out me, so I shot them. Sorry, it wasn’t on purpose. It was more like a reflex.

After a few seconds, the girl then started to break out in a very loud laughter. Hahahahaha!

Rob and Alice looked at each other confused. Rob asked her before he fell to the ground and started puking, What the hell is going on, would you please enlighten us.

Sorry for all of that. It was just a joke. I haven’t seen many people around this area, so I thought I would have some fun. You see those bandana things they’re wearing. It controls them to do what I say, I can always find more. Anyways, my name is Winter, but people call me Sprite. So please feel free to call me as you see fit, Sprite said finally after she stopped laughing.

Oh well, isn’t that just dandy. Thanks for the scare. You really freaked me out. Whatever, so why do they call you Sprite? Alice said, still trying to get her breath under control.

Well, that’s because I control little animals and monsters, so you know it kind of fits. Dude, calm down over there. I’m not going to hurt you guys. So where’re you guys headed? Sprite said, looking over at Rob while he was puking.

Rob finally stood up after he finished puking his brains out from all the stress of there being a chance he would be stabbed to death and saw this average-size blonde girl with a more than average figure standing there and gasped loudly as if he had not seen other people before, and he instantly thought to himself that she was the prettiest woman he had ever seen.

Alice saw him breathing hard and almost drooling from his mouth and scoffed at him and then spoke up. We are headed to the next town over, the Gutter. We’re looking for a man named Jacob Stevens. He is a longtime family friend. But we haven’t seen him in years, so we don’t know where he is.

Sprite thought for a moment and then finally said, Well, if you need a guide, I could show you the way there. I know Stevens somewhat well. Everyone thinks he is crazy, but I find that his work is just hard to understand. So to most common people it might seem nuts, but in reality they are just not smart enough to understand it.

After some time, Rob wiped off the drool from his face and said, Sure, that sounds lovely. All we have is this map to go on, and we don’t go outside and explore much.

So who are you guys? I mean what are your names? Sprite finally asked after noticing they never introduced themselves.

Together they said, We are the Youngs. Alice and Rob Young at your service!

Oh, okay. Spooky, you guys just sounded like automated robots, Sprite said, freaked out by how close they were.

Sorry, you’re the first person we have meet in many years, so we wanted to introduce ourselves nicely. Didn’t mean to sound weird, Rob said for the both of them, knowing Alice also wanted to apologize.

Feeling somewhat comfortable around this new chick, Alice said, Yeah, we are really close due to the fact we have been together just the two of us for roughly fifteen years now. See our parents died one thousand years ago fighting to protect us. We have been frozen almost all of that time. We’ve only been awake for fifteen years since then, and we haven’t been outside our house that much. So excuse some off our weird behaviors.

Rob turned and coughed toward Alice. Alice noticed and understanding Rob said, Sorry, I sometimes ramble on. Sorry.

It’s okay. I haven’t really talked to many people myself. I’m kind of a shut-in, always working on this project or that project. Very busy working on lots of stuff, she said, understanding how they felt because this was somewhat new to her as well.

Taking a second look at all of Sprite, Rob finally noticed that she was covered in grease marks and dirt and understood what
