About this ebook

Hello. My name is Bea, and I am a Troubleshooter of the Galactic Federation. When a monster killed the Chief of the sea-dwelling people of the planet Piuri 2, his daughter, Sia, asked the Federation to send a hunter to remove it. But, when the hunter kept returning to her planet, Sia begged me for help.

I retired (early) and started a new career as a writer. I wrote short stories and articles. Some were published; some won prizes; some sank without trace.Having heard my stories, two friends suggested I should write for children. I’d never thought of that, although I’d spent my first career communicating with young people – as a Chemistry teacher, and running clubs for badminton, chess, table tennis and hillwalking.I tried writing for young people – and I loved it. It became my main occupation. I sent samples to publishers. One asked to see a complete story. In excitement, I sent it off. Then nothing. After four months, I rang, and was told the manuscript was being considered: I would be notified. Then more nothing. Now, after eight years, I no longer rush to the door when the letter box rattles. But I kept writing the stories because I enjoyed it so much. Until, in late 2013, I learned I could publish my stories and games as e-books. Since then, I’ve been polishing and issuing some of them. I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.Check out the series:C: Charades – party game – a new twist to the traditional game.D: Diagags – party game – gags written as plays for two people.M: My Story – novels – classical stories, told by the heroes.O: One-Offs – party game – guess the titles, not quite the classical ones.P: Pop Tales – short stories – inspired by 60s and 70s hit songs.Q: Quote-Outs – word games – can you deduce the missing words?S: Inside Story – novels – a boy’s adventures inside classical stories.T: Troubleshooters – novels – space adventures for young people.

    IT’S NOT DIFFICULT.

I stood outside the door of Wellington’s office, took a deep breath and called, Open. The door slid aside.

Wellington was in the command chair, the bottom of the U of seats facing the terminal of Victor, the computer of the Galactic Federation. He frowned at me and growled, "Bea! What do you want?"

Obsidian sent me. From my reports, he knows I’m interested in the environment. He said you’d asked for an agent for an environmental mission. Obsidian is commander of all the local agents.

Humph! If Obsidian sent you, I suppose I must give you the job. But the hunter will not be pleased to see a little girl.

Are you suggesting I can’t do it? I didn’t try to hide my annoyance.

No. It’s not difficult. I suppose you can manage it. A planet has asked the Federation to remove a wild animal which is troubling them. And Federation rules say that, when a non-native goes hunting on a planet, an agent must accompany him. I didn’t want to waste an Investigator on a trivial job, so I asked Obsidian if he could send someone.

What planet is the mission on?

He waved a hand. I don’t know. Victor will give you the details. Apologise to the hunter. Tell him Reynard is ill, and Obsidian ordered me to send you.

I couldn’t say what I felt like saying, so I said, I’ll tell him. I went to the door.

Wait! With Reynard, these jobs have always gone smoothly. Can I trust you to do this one without causing trouble?

I said, I’ll do it as well as I can. Then I left before he annoyed me any more.

    A HAMJA

I went to my cabin, where I ordered, Wake, Victor. Wellington’s sent me with a hunter to remove an animal which is causing trouble. He said you would tell me about it.

"That is on Piuri 5. The whole surface of the planet is covered by sea, except for a small
