I thought you were going to text me when you landed?

Asher’s lip curved into a smirk as he observed the contents of the text message he’d just received. Taking a moment to contemplate his reply, he twirled the phone between his fingers, unaware that he was still sporting a grin until he heard.

What the hell you over there grinning at?

    Nothing, he replied quickly.

Revealing the truth meant explaining a situation he hadn’t entirely defined yet. Nor was he ready to receive any criticism about his choices.

    You a damn lie.

Mind your bu… he broke off, eyes widened as the car zoomed past the worn sign bearing the name of the small town they were entering.

    Woodgate.

Ain’t no fucking way, Asher exclaimed, mouth gaped as he gawked out of the window.

Pressing the button to roll the window down automatically, he was instantaneously assaulted by thick, chalky dust blowing into the window. Coughing rapidly, he quickly rolled the window up, fighting to clear his windpipe. To his left, his best friend and current driver, Quentin, chuckled deeply.

That shit ain’t funny, Asher gasped, inhaling deeply.

The fuck if it’s not, Quentin grinned. I told you, summers here hit differently. This heat ain’t nothing to play with.

    Whatever.

Don’t think I missed that you didn’t answer my question earlier, either. That’s Tati hitting you up, isn’t it?

And if it was? Asher glared at him pointedly.

Shaking his head, Quentin released a short whistle. You’re grown. All I can do about it is keep reminding you that she’s bad news.

Asher was less annoyed than he would have been if it were anyone else prying into his personal life. But Quentin was the closest thing to a brother Asher would ever have. He respected Q and his opinion, even when it was unwarranted.

Calm down. It ain’t even as deep as you’re trying to make it. Tati is cool.

Cool and looking for a come up. You can do better.

Tatianna and Asher met at an industry party, exchanged numbers, and talked here and there. Nothing between them had been defined outside of a date or two, nor was it serious. Asher wasn’t even sure if he could handle something serious while trying to maintain his career.

He’d explained this to his friend plenty of times, but it seemed to go in one ear and out of the other.

Ignoring Quentin, Asher went back to gazing out of the window, unable to believe just how small the town was. Granted, Quentin had given him fair warning that spending the Fourth of July holiday in Woodgate might not have been Asher’s speed, allowing Asher ample time to back out of it.

Years ago, when they’d been drafted to the same football team, Asher and Quentin had connected instantly. They’d become fast friends, and Asher constantly teased him about his country ways. But in the time they’d known one another, Asher had never gotten to experience the slow life Quentin had.

With his father heading out of town for the holiday and having a bit of a break due to the off-season, Asher didn’t mind riding shotgun with Quentin so he wouldn’t have to be alone. He should have known better.

He wasn’t privy to the big holiday family gatherings that Quentin often talked about and had slowly come to desire to experience one of his own. Quentin’s family was as close as he would ever get, but from the looks of things, he hadn’t missed out on much. At all.
