A cool—no, cold— A cold breeze flowed through my hair and across my neck, making me regret not wearing my scarf. Everything else was warm, but my neck felt like somebody was slapping it repeatedly. I zipped my coat all the way up to my chin and adjusted the collar, hoping to ward off another wind attack. With my gloved hands stuffed deep into the pockets of my parka, I quickly strolled through the half-full parking lot.

I’d lived in Diamondville my entire life and loved the Cupid’s Choice Festival. The food was phenomenal, and it was always a fun time. This was my first year doing it solo, however. My usual partner in crime went on vacation and ditched me for shirtless men down in Trinidad. I couldn’t knock her, though. If I had the PTO, I would’ve been with her. Too bad I used it all trying to be off for Christmas. Now, I had to wait for it to accrue.

Anyway, I was on my own and had every intention of enjoying myself. I’d pre-purchased the all-access food pass, which meant I could eat and drink any and everything I wanted without having to pay at the food stalls—another first. The best part was the alcoholic beverages were included as well. I didn’t pay for the all-access game pass because I wasn’t there for that. I wanted the food and the walk.

The event started at 11AM, and I made sure to arrive right on time. I didn’t plan to be out there all day–couldn’t. In addition to my festival ticket, I’d also purchased a ticket to the Lock & Key Blind Date Event that evening. I’d need time to get home and primp before that started. I wasn’t looking for love. Been there. Done that. Hated It. I wasn’t looking for anything, really.

The event was broadcasted as a hook-up event. One evening with a stranger. Dinner. Dancing... A hotel room if you brought him up. I figured, why not? I didn’t plan to bring anybody back to the room. I’d yet to meet a man I just had to let between my legs within an hour of meeting him. If I did, however, the room would be waiting.

My first stop at the festival was always the hot chocolate stand. I was a sucker for the pink hot chocolate spiked with a bit of brandy and stirred with a white chocolate straw. Right when they handed it to you, a marshmallow flower bloomed to fill the rim. It was delicious. My next stop was the popcorn stand. More white chocolate, but I didn’t care. I wanted all the damn sugar.

Thankfully, the organizers understood the season and strategically placed warming rooms throughout the festival grounds for anybody who needed a break from the cold. The trailers that housed the warming rooms also held the restrooms, which was where I was headed when a sweet aroma hit my nostrils. It smelled like cake—or bread—and rum. I did like Toucan Sam suggested and followed my nose. Right over to a dessert stand that boasted the best dessert in Diamondville. This was a new vendor. I’d never even heard of them before, but I was willing to test their theory.

    I stepped up to the
