    A NOTE ABOUT CAPITALIZATION

It is a bit of a conundrum when using the King James Bible to maintain a consistent pattern of capitalization, particularly for titles and divine pronouns. The style in this book is, in all cases, to use the capitalization convention of the King James Version when directly quoting from it, but use standard English language writing rules when not. Today’s English language convention is that pronouns referring to God, Christ, or the Holy Spirit are capitalized; they are not capitalized in the King James version except at the beginning of sentences or verses. Accordingly, in this book the divine pronouns are capitalized except when quoting directly from the Bible.

Titles, like Antichrist or King or Beast are a slightly different matter. Again, the King James Bible does not capitalize those titles. However, in this book, unless the context suggests otherwise, titles for the end-time characters we discuss will be capitalized, except for direct quotes from the Bible. We have chosen to do that because in lieu of their names, which we obviously do not yet know, their scriptural titles are the only way we can refer to them with clarity. We are discussing real people that will live on this earth in the future and fulfill prophecy just as God has revealed. Therefore we treat their titles as proper nouns. Thus, the beast and the false prophet when quoting Revelation will be The Beast and The False Prophet in the body of the manuscript; the king in Daniel 11:36 is The King in the body of the manuscript. This also includes titles that have been derived from scripture, but not specifically spelled out in scripture. For example, from the scripture in Revelation 13 that refers to a beast rise up out of the sea and another beast coming up out of the earth we get the titles Beast out of the Sea and Beast out of the Earth. From the phrase the prince that shall come in Daniel 9:26 we derive the title The Roman Prince. And so on.

    FOREWORD

During the time that I served as Sammy Kent’s pastor, God knit our hearts together in a genuine, Christian kinship. Sammy loved the Word of God, not merely for academic satisfaction, but because he desired a deep, abiding fellowship with the God of the Word. What pastor wouldn’t be inclined favorably to such a congregant? Sammy’s love for the Word has motivated him to study it meticulously, carefully examining what Scripture says rather than man-made suppositions. This is particularly true regarding the prophetic word and end-time events. Again, this is not a matter of trivial pursuit with Sammy; it is because he is eagerly anticipating the impending return of Christ for His church.

The book that you hold in your hand is designed to correct some all-too-often held misconceptions about anti-Christ. Sammy carefully and accurately identifies anti-Christ and explores Biblically what makes this beast anti Christ. Love for our Savior ought to drive us to clearly recognize those distinguishing characteristics that would seek to supplant His lordship in our lives. Indeed, the spirit of anti-Christ is already in the world (cf. I John 4:3). Sadly, many Christians are preoccupied with this spirit in government (and there is no denying that Satan is at work there) but have done little to recognize it in houses of worship, the very place where anti-Christ as the false Christ will take his seat.

Sammy has done the Lord’s church a great service by correcting this error. The Biblical evidence is compelling, and this work presents that evidence with splendid skill. Instead of capitulating to the spirit of this age, Sammy helps us look for a city whose builder and maker is God (Hebrews 11:10), a place where the true Christ is seated on the right hand of the majesty on high (Hebrews 1:3).

    PREFACE

Nothing kindles more excitement among even the most casual church members than to hear that the next sermon or study course or Sunday School theme is the book of Revelation. And what they most want to hear about is the Antichrist. But to the surprise of even some serious students of the scripture, the word antichrist appears nowhere in that book. Not one single end-time personality is called the Antichrist in Revelation. Nevertheless, the fascination with the very word antichrist is so pervasive that a cottage industry of books, videos, movies, web sites, and social media now swirls throughout Christian circles. Unfortunately there is also much confusion and misunderstanding about the Antichrist, the result of decades of errors read or heard, then repeated, albeit unwittingly and with good intentions. Yet many mistaken declarations about Antichrist by self-proclaimed prophecy experts are punctuated with every bit of extra-scriptural, self-aggrandizing hoopla the commentator can generate.

It is time for a reasoned, sober-minded, serious, and Biblical answer to the mis-information that is robbing genuinely saved, God fearing Christians and even preachers of Bible truth. Yes, the Bible certainly speaks of Antichrist. Yes, he is a real man that will play a major role in the future of this planet. And yes, though not called by the title antichrist, he is most assuredly in the book of Revelation. I anticipate that many who read this have unknowingly encountered error from teachers, writers, and commentators. This is not because of any sinister motive. I am certain the preachers and teachers that expound on this subject have no intent to mis-interpret prophecy. But sadly, error has become so ingrained in Christian parlance that bringing it to light often results in reactions of anger, indifference, and worst of all, stubborn refusal to reconsider the prevailing point of view and re-examine the scripture.

As the Apostle Peter wrote, We have also a more sure word of prophecy. (2 Peter: 1:19) That more sure word is the word of God. The scripture must be the plumb line of truth, not the writings or preaching of Bible scholars and students. Commentaries and books are not inerrant truth no matter how respected the author may be or how glibly he writes or speaks. Ideally, they encourage the reader to pursue the truth through his own prayerful study of the Bible. It is my hope and desire that all who read this will be moved to search the scripture anew with fervent prayer, an ear to hear what the Spirit has to say, and a heart to understand.

    CHAPTER 1

    WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS

    ABOUT THE FUTURE

    Prophecy And History.

Learning about prophecy is a step-by-step process. It takes much time, much prayer, much study, much meditation, and much work to piece it all together like a jigsaw puzzle. The giving of prophecy was also a step-by-step process. Like a gentle schoolteacher, God has revealed His divine plan to man by degrees. "Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:" (Isaiah 28: 9-10) That is why it is impossible to properly interpret the book of Revelation without also studying the many other portions of the Bible that prophesy of the end of the age and the second coming of Christ.

With the benefit, or perhaps the stumbling block of hindsight to either assist or hinder their understanding of the scripture, most students of prophecy turn first to Revelation; only later do they discover the Old Testament prophecies
