    Chapter 1

    There is a God!

Mama said: Always be real, especially before God. He already knows the truth anyway!

There is a reason why this chapter is first. I considered long and hard about whether even to include it. My hope is this book will inspire many young men and women all over the world and from all walks of life, and I believe in respecting each person’s choice of faith. However, since I considered this book a compilation of key lessons I learned as I went through life, I could not in good conscience leave out the most important lesson that accounts for the greatest victories I have had the privilege of experiencing. My God has been––and continues to be––the centre of my life and all that I do. He accounts for the significant joy, contentment, successes, rebounds, and growth I presently enjoy. I am convicted that without Him, I would not have been able to experience such. Having said that, I pray each person who reads this book will come to share in my faith in God, but as previously mentioned, I respect your choice should you not. Still, I encourage you to explore and glean the maximum benefit from all the chapters in this book, including this one.

    Salvation and Intimacy with God

Far beyond religion is a very real God. I have come to learn that it is possible to attend church, enjoy the activities, connect with the people, and still never meet with God. It is less about the house of God and more about the God of the house of God. Never forget that! I believe in God, but people often use the word God to avoid making others feel uncomfortable, which I completely understand. However, I want to make it abundantly clear that the God I refer to is the Lord Jesus Christ. Your decision to believe in Jesus is a personal one and your own to make. However, I will share my belief and experience for your consideration.

Being a believer in Jesus Christ is a wonderful thing, and I wish I had been one from birth. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that I honestly and seriously gave my heart to Jesus, and I have been a believer ever since. Notice I did not say I am a Pentecostal, Methodist, or Roman Catholic. I am a believer––in the Lord Jesus Christ. That is the key. There are believers who attend churches across various denominations, just as there are many unbelievers who also attend churches across various denominations. So, never mistake a denomination to represent an automatic pass to God. It always comes down to the individual. Therefore, you must hold fast to your salvation through the Lord Jesus because there is nothing more precious you can possess.

Unfortunately, through many mistakes made by believers and misrepresentations by persons pretending to be believers, the church has gotten a lot of flak over the years––perhaps rightfully so. However, this does not prevent you or anyone else from being a true believer. The errors of people do not and cannot negate the existence of God. As individuals, we have to account for our own decisions regardless
