Johann Hari is a man on a journey to redemption. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Hari grew up in London. He showed early promise as a writer when he jointly won The Times Student News Journalist of the Year award in 2000 for his contributions to the King's College, Cambridge newspaper, Varsity. Hari left the paper amid allegations of unethical behavior. Despite this, he attained first-class honors when he achieved his social and political science qualifications in 2001. Hari then launched his journalism career with a two-year stint at The Statesman before becoming a regular columnist at The Independent. He also contributed columns to major publications, including The Huffington Post and The New York Times.
Hari was awarded the Young Journalist of the Year trophy at the 2003 Press Gazette awards while working as an arts critic for the BBC. In 2009, Hari gained significant recognition when he was listed as one of the Top 100 most influential Left-wingers by The Telegraph. His career collapsed in 2011 when several bloggers exposed that Hari had plagiarized and fabricated a lot of the information in his work, among other ethical infractions. Disgraced, Hari left The Independent in 2012, reinventing himself as an author. He released his first book, Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, in 2015. Since then, Hari has published two more books, the latest being the New York Times bestseller, Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention and How to Think Deeply Again.
