Book Abstract for The Whiteness of Wealth
Taxes, which are supposedly universal and neutral, are designed in such a way that it favors citizens based on skin color. Dorothy Brown spent decades of her life proving that the United States tax code is not colorblind. Many of its policies are optimized for White wealth at the expense of Black Americans. In The Whiteness of Wealth, Brown explores the tax subsidies for marriage, homeownership, retirement accounts, student loans, and inheritances to support her arguments.
Dorothy Brown’s main point in The Whiteness of Wealth: How the Tax System Impoverishes Black Americans—and How We Can Fix It is to show the reality of how taxation is optimized to provide more benefit to the Whites, indirectly affecting Black Americans’ financial situation; they are never on the receiving end of something that is supposedly universal. Throughout the book, Brown explains the relationship between race and wealth by using cases of real situations experienced by Black families. Her years of research conclude the presence of systemic racism in almost every aspect of life as it permeates in marriage, homeownership, education, job opportunities, and inheritance. With racism thriving in these areas, it goes without saying that White Americans are always on the positive side of the persisting racial wealth
