M.J. Zitnansky was born in Czechoslovakia and came to Canada with her husband, Frank, and their son after their homeland was invaded by Russia in 1968. Frank, a general practitioner, had his medical practice in Etobicoke, Ontario. Marie worked in his office as his secretary until his death in 2007. She has three children and five grandchildren with another on the way.

The anthill that was at the edge of the forest was about threefeet high and was built up from sand and spruce needles. There was a special tree near the anthill, and each fall, some of the needles fall on top of the hill.
Ants are amazing creatures. They form colonies. They live and work together, and each of them knows what has to be done.
