    Jasper's Big Adventure - William E. Boone

    CHAPTER 1

    J

asper was a bullfrog that lived in a small cove with a group of other frogs on the east side of Greenfield Lake. Toby was Jasper’s best friend, and they were always together jumping, swimming, and competing against each other and the other frogs.

Jasper could swim faster and jump farther than any frog on this side of the lake, and he liked to show off his skills. He was more adventurous than the other frogs, who were content to just jump and play all day. He wanted to see new things and liked the excitement of exploring different areas around the cove.

I’ll race you to that cypress stump, Jasper said to Toby.

Whoa, let’s take a break! Toby exclaimed. Aren’t you tired? We have been hopping all over this cove and I’m beat. I am all hopped out. Besides, it’s almost time for Old Croaker to start one of his stories. I think he’s going to talk about the cat tonight.

No way! exclaimed Toby. Even you can’t make that jump. It’s too far.

You’re just too negative, said Jasper. Give it a try.

I will if you let me jump from the log, said Toby. The log was a little closer.

Jasper smiled. Why not? Go for it.

Toby summoned all his strength and jumped, but he landed just short of the rock. Jasper laughed and jumped from the lily pad. He made it to the rock! He looked at Toby in the water and smiled.

    You were saying?

OK, OK, you win. Now can we go listen to Old Croaker?

Jasper and Toby hopped near the large stump where Old Croaker always sat to tell his stories. All the frogs were gathering around waiting for Old Croaker. It was a loud, noisy bunch! Everyone was talking and practicing their croaking
