BOOK I
The anthill that was at the edge of the forest was about three-feet high and was built up from sand and spruce needles. There was a special tree near the anthill, and each fall, some of the needles fall on top of the hill.
Ants are amazing creatures. They form colonies. They live and work together, and each of them knows what has to be done.
The anthill had rooms, hallways, and more rooms underground. Some rooms were used as nurseries for the eggs and baby ants. Some of the rooms were for aphids that provide ants with honeydew.
The anthill is stowing with corridors, areas for eggs, larvae cocoons, and supplies. All the ants are busy doing different tasks.
In the anthill at the edge of the forest were Jack and thousands of other ants. Many of the ants were workers. The worker ants build the nest and keep it clean. They also look after the eggs and had to feed their queen. The queen is much leaner than the workers because her body is full of eggs.
