    Belief in God

    Over the centuries philosophers and theologians have developed many arguments to prove the existence of God. For example, the very existence of the universe, and the order and design within it, strongly suggest that there must be a Creator who made it.

    Such arguments are interesting and valuable, but no one comes to a belief in God simply through philosophical reasoning. Believers believe because they have experienced God in some way, or have a deep-rooted need to believe in him. Indeed, that need in itself can be seen as evidence of God’s reality: he has created us with a need to know him.

    Who is it who convinces us that God exists? People can have a part to play in this, but ultimately it is God himself – the Holy Spirit – who makes his reality known to the individual, speaking in many different ways to the human heart and mind.

    Being human

    Modern science and philosophy tell us that a human being is merely a highly sophisticated animal. The Bible, however, tells a different story. It says, God created man in his own image (Genesis 1:27).

    We are physical creatures, like the animals, but unlike them, we are also spiritual beings, possessing a spiritual identity that is a reflection of God’s own identity.
