    Erryk (or, to give him his full name, Erryk Trollwrangler Dwarfbane Diamondhacker Gundalphssen) was an Elph with an enquiring mind.

    Really that came with the territory in his job. He was a Professor of ElphWisdom (we would call it philosophy) at the University of Zelrond The Great, the most highly respected seat of learning on ElphWorld. Erryk possessed (probably) the finest mind on his planet; and since the Elphs were the most intelligent of the ten species inhabiting The System, it was almost certainly true that he was the cleverest living person.

    But even his high-powered brain was baffled by the line of thought that he was presently pursuing.

    In a nutshell, over the last three years or so, he had felt a growing uneasiness about The System. There were just too many unanswered questions, too many things that, to him, seemed … well … just plain odd.

    Having an enquiring mind was a mixed blessing. It had raised him to the very highest echelons of Elphish academia, but it had also left him with a deep disturbance in his soul.

    He wished he knew some kindred spirits; people he could talk to about all this; people who would understand.

    His four wives weren’t much help in this regard. While they were all proud to be married to such a distinguished scholar and glad to bear his children, they had no interest whatsoever in his philosophical work. Indeed, sometimes they actually fell asleep when he tried to discuss it with
