About this ebook

#1 I have the best story in my family. It was born out of the collapse of our original family, and it could have been devastating, but I was a toddler when it happened. Bobbie was different, though, and she had a strong bond with me.

#2 I was three years old when my parents left Abbott, Texas, with another woman named Lorraine. I was hysterical, screaming and crying my little eyes out. I held on to my father’s shirt so tightly that my grandfather had to drag me away.

#3 I grew up in a small farming community in Texas, called Abbott, between Dallas and Waco. My parents, Bobbie and Ira, married when they were sixteen. My grandparents, who took me in when my parents couldn’t care for me, always called my parents Mama and Daddy Nelson.

#4 My mother, Myrle Greenhaw, was an amazing woman who was three-quarters Cherokee. She was fiercely independent and loved dancing, smoking, and card playing. She was scorned for her ethnic appearance in Abbott.
