About this ebook

#1 I grew up in El Cerrito, California, before rapid transit. I was a little kid who could walk around by himself, head over to the market with a nickel in his pocket, and buy an apple. I remember going over to talk to the butcher to get bones for my dog.

#2 I had a close connection with my community as a child. I loved going to the drugstore near my house, where I would spend my ten cents on the counter to get a soda fountain drink. I would watch the movies from my bed at home.

#3 I had a day for the ages when I was four years old. I was climbing some small apricot trees, and after eating a few green (unripe) apricots, we decided to climb to the top of the high school. We got all the way to the top level and stood up on the frame. There was nothing but sky above us.

#4 I learned about harmony from my parents, who were very good at it. I would sit between them and sometimes sing along. I had fun finding a note either over or under what the class was singing.

I had a very close relationship with my mother, who was a social person and a teacher. She kept me on a wholesome path, and I turned out all right.

    #6

My father, Galen Robert Fogerty, was a Linotype operator for the Berkeley Gazette. He was a dreamer, and he never got the chance to realize his dreams. He was a family legend that we were related to Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett.

    #7

My father was a dreamer, but he was also successful in many other ways. He loved camping and the outdoors, and he read stories to us when we were young. He never found the gold mine, but he was always on the fringes.

    #8

I have many happy memories of Putah Creek, a creek near Winters, in Northern California. I loved going to Putah Creek with my family. It was a picturesque, slow-moving little creek. I learned how to swim there.

    #9

My father told me that one day, the town of Monticello would be underwater. I had no idea what he was talking about, but I understood that he was saying good-bye to our idyllic Putah Creek. In fact, they did dam up the creek, turning it into Lake Berryessa.
