Dingle, Dingle! Here Comes Dwindle! More Little Christmas Stories for Girls and Boys by Lady Hershey for Her Little Brother Mr. Linguini - Olivia Civichino

    Dwindle’s First Vacation

Yowsi, yowsa! shouted Dwindle. My first vacation with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus!

It was 4 o’clock in the morning, and Dwindle, Santa’s youngest elf, was all packed and ready to take off to Florida.

Dingle, dingle! This is going to be so much fun! he said to himself as he hurried to carry his bags to the front door.

Slow down, Dwindle, said Santa. Before we leave, you need to promise me that when we arrive in Florida, you can’t tell anyone that I am Santa Claus, or that you are an elf, or that we live at the North Pole. Please don’t tell anyone who Mrs. Claus is, either.

    Why? asked Dwindle.

Well, Dwindle, we don’t want to attract a lot of attention from all the children, Santa explained.

    I promise, Dwindle said.

They took an airplane to get to Florida, and Dwindle looked like the happiest little man on earth, because he was going with Santa.

When they arrived, Dwindle quickly put on his blue swim trunks, his blue flip-flops, big blue sunglasses, and a blue summer hat that covered his elf ears. Then he smothered himself in sunscreen. No one could tell who Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Dwindle really were, or that they had come from the North Pole.

Dwindle noticed a lot of little children playing together and having fun, but he spotted one little girl who wasn’t playing with anyone. She looked sad.

Could I go play with that little girl? Dwindle asked Santa.

Good idea, said Santa, but remember your promise, and don’t wander off.

    You got it! said Dwindle.

Dwindle approached the little girl. Hi, I’m Dwindle, he said. What’s your name?

I’m Tiffany, the little girl replied in a soft, sad voice.

Do you want to play? Dwindle asked.

    No, said Tiffany.

Why do you look so sad? Dwindle asked.

I wasn’t invited to a birthday party for a girl in my class, Tiffany explained.

That’s okay, Dwindle said confidently. That doesn’t mean you aren’t a great, amazing person. We can’t get invited to everything, and not everyone we meet is going to like us, and that’s okay. You just need to be happy with you. I’m sure your mommy and daddy and your real friends love you more than anything in this world. Tiffany’s mood suddenly changed, because Dwindle was so positive and encouraging.

They do, Tiffany said with a big smile on her face.

That should make you feel like you’re on top of the world! Dwindle said. "Have one

of my sour candy canes, and let’s make Santa’s village in the sand."

    Why Santa’s village? Tiffany asked.

Because I love Santa Claus, Dwindle replied.

    That’s cool, said Tiffany.

All the while, Santa had been listening to everything Dwindle had said to Tiffany.

Santa was proud of Dwindle for keeping his promise and making a little girl feel like she was worth everything, and so much more.

Dwindle’s first vacation was wonderful. He loved Florida, kept his promise, made a friend, and did not get himself or Santa into any mischief.

    Back to Elf School

The holidays were over, and Dwindle was starting his second year of elf school.

He was very excited and couldn’t wait to learn how to make new toys.

When he arrived at school on the first day of class, his teacher,
