Paper Daisies Little Stories for Girls and Boys by Lady Hershey for Her Little Brother Mr. Linguini - Olivia Civichino

    The Sad Peach Tree

There once was a little peach tree, which was surrounded by bigger peach trees in an orchard. The orchard belonged to a young farmer, and the farmer had a little girl named Kala.

One summer day, Kala was walking in the orchard. She was feeling very sad. She had just learned that someone wanted to buy the farmland from Kala’s daddy, so they could build houses on it. That would mean all the trees in the orchard would be cut down.

As Kala walked through the orchard, she noticed that all the bigger peach trees had big, beautiful peaches ripening on their branches, but the little peach tree had grown no peaches yet at all.

Why aren’t you growing any peaches? Kala asked the little tree. I know! It must be that you’re sad, just like me.

As Kala turned to walk away, a couple of leaves softly fell down from the little peach tree.

Are you trying to tell me something? Kala asked the little tree. Do you know why I’m feeling sad?

Another leaf fell down from the tree’s branches and landed on Kala’s shoulder. Kala just knew that the tree somehow magically understood why she was sad.

I will come back and see you tomorrow, Kala promised the tree.

The next day, Kala and her daddy walked out to the orchard together. Kala was feeling overjoyed. Kala had found out that her daddy had refused to ever sell his land. He loved the beautiful peach trees too much to let them be cut
