About this ebook

He's dead and can't help her—unless she breaks all the rules.

I attended school with Dr. Landon Sikes. I know, you want to hear all about him—he had that magnetic charm. But this story is about me.

Back when Landon taught me to cross through the veil into the spirit world, things were already changing; my talent of calling spectres across into the world of the living was just beginning to be demonized. My teachers gave up trying to get me to stop invoking and cross over instead, but with Landon's help—and a lot of encouragement from my grandmother beyond the veil—I was able to learn.

That's why I use spirit invocation to teach my ghost-inclined students to cross the veil. Even though social pressure to stop invoking spectres is growing every day. Even though I could lose my job for it. Hence, the inquest. And what I did there.

A Pentagram Of Candles and Spectres is a romantic paranormal short story. It's part of the Second Acts of Weary Warrior Women collection.

A Pentagram Of Candles And Spectres - Elizabeth F. Shearly

P lease fetch five candles from the cupboard at the back of the class, said Cindy.

The student scampered to the storage unit while the rest of the kids fell silent. Five candles meant invoking a ghost.

Her runner dumped the candles on her desk, and Cindy thanked them as they settled back in their seat. She stood the candles in a pentagon on the floor at the front of the class and clicked her electric lighter to get each one burning.

A whisper slid through the classroom as Cindy finished off with the candles. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. The tug of the veil urged her across, but instead, she reached across the veil and grasped Pauline’s hand. The old woman grasped hers in return and allowed herself to be towed across the veil. The students fell silent. Cindy opened her eyes. Before the class stood a translucent old woman beaming at them.

Good morning, Ms. Flivor, said Cindy. Thanks so much for joining us today.

Thank you for having me, dear, said Pauline. Despite her wispy appearance, her voice retained a teacher’s no-nonsense intonation.

Class, please welcome Pauline Flivor, activist and former teacher here at our very own Landon Sikes Public School, said Cindy. Everyone has been looking forward to hearing your story, as always. Cindy smiled and gestured for the spectre to proceed.

I’m happy to hear my audience is interested, said Pauline. Before I begin, let me get to know all of you a little better. Who here likes to invoke spirits across the veil?

A few hands went up. At this point, most of Cindy’s students didn’t have enough experience to know for sure.

And who among you likes to walk the spirit realm and convene with us that way?

A few more hands shot up. It was the more common way to commune with the spirit world.

And who likes to do both, like Ms. Dawson? said Pauline, gesturing to Cindy.

This was the most numerous group. It was good for eight-year-olds to keep their options open.

Thank you, everyone, for participating, said Pauline. "I was one of you in that first group when I was young; I found that I preferred to invoke across the veil rather than travel there myself. You should know that there is nothing wrong with either way of doing things or using each method in different circumstances. Back when I was teaching
