About this ebook

Kasey is an ordinary girl, living a seemingly ordinary life. That is until one evening she wakes up to find herself in the middle of her backyard. Thinking her childhood habit of sleepwalking has started up again, the fifteen year old girl doesn't think much of it… until she watches her skin turn translucent right before her eyes.

Believing it is all a dream, Kasey is relieved to find herself safely ensconced in her bed the following morning. But her skin turns transparent in the middle of a lecture at school that day, and Kasey realizes her experience in the backyard was certainly not a dream.

As if that weren't bizarre, and terrifying enough, Kasey realizes that she has also starting seeing dead people, casually walking around at school, and in her town. Convinced her two new supernatural abilities are linked, she fears her sudden new gifts are a sign that she is dying.

With the help of her best friend, Lindsey, and a quirky young man who randomly appears in her kitchen one morning, Kasey tries to come to grips with her newfound abilities. But will she ever discover what said abilities really mean? And can they protect her from the malevolent spirits she begins to encounter?

    Ghost Girl - Kasey Fisher

    Chapter One: In The Backyard

The first thing I registered was grass, slightly damp, tickling my legs. My eyes flickered open, and I realized the world was dark, and sideways. Gingerly, I eased myself upright. I was on the lawn, in the middle of the backyard. I could see my red, and white swing set, half in shadow, a few feet from my parent’s chain link fence. Blinking, I stared up at the sky, but I couldn’t discern what time it was. I had no idea how I had gotten there.

Great, Kasey, I thought. You’re sleepwalking again. It’s something I used to do all the time when I was little. My parents often joked that they considered tying me up while I slept, so I would never get too far. They would come into the family room, only to find me sleeping in the middle of the floor, or slumped over our kitchen table. But I don’t think I had ever gone so far as to step outside the house before.

The wind picked up, whipping my long brown hair all around me as I wavered to my feet. The sky was turning a deep purple hue, but the moisture on the grass made me think the sun would be up in just a few short hours. Blades of grass crunched pleasantly underneath me as I walked around, coaxing my legs to wake up. I knew it would be smart to immediately march back into the house, and go back to bed. But the backyard was strangely peaceful, and I found myself walking towards the swing set without really giving it a second thought.

The breeze was light, and warm against my plaid pajama bottoms, pleasantly reminding me that summer was fast approaching. I couldn’t wait to be free of school, and all the stress it inevitably caused me. I would be a junior the following year—the year of standardized exams, and college essays. I knew life would never be the same, past this coming summer.

I reached for the chain of the swingset with my hand, but faltered forward. Blinking, I straightened, and went to grab the chain again. My hand went completely through the metal links, as if they were made of nothing but air.

No, I whispered out loud, feeling my stomach begin to churn with trepidation. No, that can’t be...

I eased my hand backward, through the chains once more. The air was slightly cooler where the chains hung, but my skin, and muscles, and bones still traveled through the metal seamlessly. Heart thumping harshly against my lungs, I held my hand up to better see in the moonlight.

I have always been a pale person. My fair skin tone is just like my mother’s. We both have a scattering of freckles across the bridges of our noses. But as I looked at myself in the damp shadows of the backyard, I knew something was very wrong. My skin looked translucent. I could see a cluster of leaves waving, and dancing in the wind through my palm.

I forced myself to chuckle, shaking my head as I did so. But of course this is a dream, I thought to myself. I didn’t really sleep walk into the yard, I have only dreamed that I have.

Curiously enough, acknowledging that I was dreaming did not allow me to grab the chain. My hand remained glassy looking, and permeable. I saw no other choice but to go inside, and attempt to sleep. I crept
