Jenny put the phone down and collapsed into the nearest chair, putting her head in her hands. There was nobody at the door – she just hadn’t been able to continue the conversation with her daughter for a moment longer.
When Sophie had first told them, months ago, that Ben had applied for the job in Australia, she had feigned support, if not delight, for their decision. After all, it was a promotion for Ben, and opportunities like this one were rare, Sophie had said – and it would be good for Scarlett, too, wouldn’t it?
Scarlett! The thought of her four-year-old granddaughter being on the other side of the world finally sank in, and Jenny let the tears flow.
