    As Nola stepped out of the factory she was swept along with the crowd. Most of them were heading for the pub with their wage packets burning a hole in their pockets. However, she knew better than to squander her money and when she reached the pub, she waited by the snug entrance.

    As usual, as it was a Friday night, she didn’t have to wait long for her mother to turn up, and Nola grumbled when she saw her mother walking happily down the road with her father; with her five sisters and one brother in tow.

    ‘Well girl, have you got it? I’m off to the bingo with your father. The kids have had their tea. Put them to bed at eight and make sure they go to the lav before they go to bed. I don’t want any wet sheets in the morning. Well girl, where is it?’

    Nola reluctantly handed her mother her pay packet and watched, as her mother ripped it open and took out the notes.

    Handing her the loose change her mother said, ‘Get yourself some new stockings with that.’ Then she and her father hobbled down the pebbled road towards town.

    Nola looked at the change and sighed, there wasn’t enough money for stockings, and she grumbled when she realised, that she would have to draw that bloody pencil line up the back of her legs again. Then she looked at the children and smiled.

    ‘Come on kids, let’s go to Connelly’s and get some sweets.’

    The children smiled back, and Nola wished she could treat them more often.

    ‘A quarter of pear drops and some candy twists please Mr Connelly.’

    ‘Sure thing. I’ll put in a few extra, plus some sherbet lemons for free.’

    ‘Thank you, that’s kind of you.’
