    Ripples - Dianna Jay

    Chapter One

Mrs. Penny Nichols, the bank’s branch manager, was a tough cookie.  She’d been in loans and acquisitions for over 40 years and really knew her business. She was what people call an old school banker!

Miss Kingsley, I sympathize with your predicament. Danielle was all ears. I knew and respected your father, he was a dear friend, she paused for a second.  But my hands are tied with this, she flips through the account papers, finds what she’s looking for and continues. He took out a thirty-thousand dollar loan.

Thirty-thousand? Danielle questioned, I was told it was fifty.  There was somewhat of a sigh of relief on Danielle’s side, but still thirty-thousand was a lot of money.

Mrs. Nichols, I just moved back to help solve this problem.  Can you give me a week to figure things out and get myself situated?

The only way this can be solved Miss Kingsley, she paused making sure she had Danielle’s attention, is for you to assume the loan.

She saw Danielle thinking it out, and added. I know it’s a lot to take on, the question to ask yourself is... how serious are you in keeping the radio station. I know it was your dad’s dream, but is it yours?

But we would still owe you for the loan, she said.

If you sell it, it would reduce what you owe, Mrs. Nichols waited.

I’ve got to talk with my family and find out what they would like to do.

I understand.  You can have the week; and with that, Mrs. Nichols stands up, shakes Danielle’s hand and they part ways.

On her way home she calls her brother Robert. Hey, it’s me.  You got a minute? she asks.

    Yeah sis, what’s up?

"I just left the bank and they said the money we owe is only thirty-thousand not fifty. Well, not only, but do you know anything about the other twenty?’

On the other end of the phone, Robert sat silent for a minute, although his mind was moving in fast mode...Not a clue sis. I’ve got to go. Bye.

When she got home she told her mom what the banker said.

I don’t understand the difference in amounts due.  Do you mom?  Did dad borrow money from another bank?  Does he really owe fifty or is it just the thirty for the radio station?  Where are the papers on the loans, mom?  What do you know about this?  The questions just flew out of her mouth.

Your dad always said he’d handle it and never would disclose any particulars about anything. Her mom was beside herself. Your dad was a very stubborn man. If he were hurting, he wouldn’t show it.  If he needed help, he wouldn’t ask for it. So, I just don’t know what to tell you, she said.

Stubborn??? Is that what you call it... stubborn!! I call it stupid!  Look at the mess it has caused his family by not being open and honest with his actions.  I am sure he didn’t plan on dying before he paid off the money, but, well, he did and look at the mess he has left us.  And no one in this family can tell me anything to help with the situation.

Yeah, I love you Dad, she says as she thrusts both hands to the
