    The house was unusually quiet and Rose hated it. After six children and all their friends filling it, she hated the stillness, the emptiness. Harry was pottering around the garden; it had always been his escape from the bedlam, he relished the peace and tranquility now that the kids had flown the nest.

    Rose wandered through to the lounge and glanced around at the empty armchairs and sofa wishing that the boys were once more lounging over them and remembering how Lily would struggle to squeeze herself onto the sofa between Zac and Ben. A tear trictkled down her pink wrinkled cheek and dripped from her chin to the ample breasts below. She had loved those days and longed to somehow retrieve them. Life was unkind, unfair and unrelenting. Walking to the window she gazed out at the beautiful flower beds, the patiently laid crazy paved path that led to her precious cherry tree. Every year she would watch it carefully from late march to mid April to see the tiny buds burst into bloom their soft pink blossoms; and then at the end of may it would all begin to fall and coat the lawn in petals creating a pink and green dappled effect. Opening the door she called to Harry and asked if he would like a cup of tea.

    Walking to the kitchen, she wondered why she bothered asking him, when had he ever refused a cup of tea! As the kettle filled, she glanced out
