About this ebook

“…While we were waiting for the announcement, we overheard loud screaming noises coming from behind the stage.”
“OK, pause. Let me guess. You girls went to check it out.”
“Yep, you’re good at this.”
“So, you led yourselves right into danger?”
“Exactly!” they said in unison.
“As we went to the backstage area, we found ourselves faced with caution tape,” one of the twins explained.
“Forcing you to turn around, right?”
“You don’t know us at all, do you? We took caution as we ducked under the tape, duh.”
I rolled my eyes as I picked up a pillow and smashed myself in the face.

Fight or Flight - Double Blessing

    Chapter 1

Why did you two drag me into this? I asked as I ran for my life.

We’re trying to run from a bad guy, so screaming at us is not a good idea! Madam responded.

OK then, where are we supposed to go? We keep running around in circles. Where am I supposed to go?

This way, Miss screamed as she opened a door within the hotel and started running up the staircase.

I don’t think this is right, Madam said as she started to climb.

How many more steps, Miss? I asked in despair. This place stinks in here.

A few more, the door said, EXIT!

It doesn’t feel like an exit to me. We keep going up—exits are down!

Miss stopped and turned around with a smile, Should we go back?

You appear to be having the time of your life, I replied as I rolled my eyes. We need to go down to get out.

OK, OK, Deputy, Madam interrupted. Down we go.

However, down was no longer an option. The bad guy, with the colossal beef stick, was taking three steps at a time.

Never mind! I shrieked as I ran past Miss and Madam up the stairway. All three of us busted through a door that led out to the rooftop. We gazed out over the city buildings and took a deep breath of fresh air.

Wow, Miss said as she stared at the view.

Wow, indeed, Madam replied as the world seemed to stop.

Hello, we’re about to be taken over, and we’re on the roof! Now what? I asked as I waved my hands in front of their faces. Then the door flew open, revealing Big Foot’s grin and my look of terror.

What do we do? What do we do? I whispered as we ran toward the edge of the building.

Deputy, use your watch powers! Miss said.

I’m not wearing two, so my powers don’t work!

    Where’s your second one?

Well, two girls who look the same sort of ruined my routine the past few days!

Oh, that makes sense. Who ruined it?

    You two!

OK, well, sorry we ruined your routine, but we must jump, Madam replied with confidence.

We what? I asked. You must be kidding me!

    Nope, now or never!

    I need a verse; need a verse! I said in a panic.

Worry about everything! Madam laughed as she flared her hands in the air.

That’s not in the Bible! I need something real!

Philippians 4:6, ‘Do not be anxious about anything!’ Miss replied. Oh, and one more, 2 Corinthians 5:7, ‘For we live by faith, not by sight.’

Lord, help us, I prayed as the three of us leaped off the ledge. Screams hit the air as our arms and legs went flying.

Wait, you’re probably wondering who we are.

Who is Miss and Madam, why are they calling me Deputy, and what’s up with the watch powers? Oh, and the most important question of all, who’s the monster with the colossal beef stick? So for you to understand the entire story, we need to start from the very beginning, where it all began, seventy-two hours prior.

    Chapter 2

My morning started normally—seventy-two hours ago. I woke up, had a bowl of sugary cereal, and put on two cool-looking blue watches, which were show-off worthy, if I do say so myself. I had just bent over to pick up the newspaper outside when, out of the blue, they fell into my life.

Why on earth are you wearing the fuchsia parachute? You know fuchsia is my favorite color!

"Well, you’re wearing the turquoise one, and that’s my favorite color. We can’t change; we’re headed straight towards that kid."

    I don’t think that’s a kid. He’s starting to look bigger!

Watch out below! they both screamed.

What’s that? I mumbled, blocking the sun with my hands. There were two black figures above me in the distance. Oh, just some human-sized squawking birds, I thought as I turned to head back into my house. WHAT? Human-sized birds? That doesn’t make any sense. I turned around to get a better view and SPLAT! Ouch, I shouldn’t have looked up. What fell on me? I opened my eyes and saw two brown-eyed, brunette girls hovering above me. Oh no, I’m seeing double. I must have a concussion.

No, there’s two of us, said the one to my left.

Are you OK? asked the voice to my right.

I tried to make it to my feet. Do I look alright to you?

Here, let us help you. They grabbed my arms, pulled me inside my house, and dumped me on the couch.

Hey, you’re the Deputy, one of the twins said as she pointed to the sign on my office door. Nice to meet a fellow brother in arms.

Wait, no, I’m not the Deputy. That’s just a stage name.

I know; all police have stage names. Some are sheriffs, others are cops, and you’re the Deputy.

No, no, wait—it doesn’t work that way.

    I’m sure it does!

    RUFF, RUFF, RUFF!

Oh, that must be your police dog, said one of the twins as she ran up to my pup.

    Um, no, just my pet.

    Oh, he’s so cute,

    It’s a girl . . .

Oh, sorry little lady, she said as she patted my dog on the head and looked towards me. What’s her name?

It’s Valley. Just a normal dog—no police title. All right, you girls can go now. Thanks for the help inside, but I’m fine.

We can’t leave. You’re the Deputy; we need your help. Why do you think we fell from the sky?

Wait a minute. I’m not the Deputy, and to answer your question, I have no idea why you’d fall from the sky. You should be more careful next time and keep your feet planted on firm ground before you fall on any more people.

You don’t understand. We’re spies. We jump out of airplanes, catch bad guys, and SAVE THE WORLD! You’re going to help us do that. Don’t you want to SAVE THE WORLD?

Um, not really. I’d prefer to save myself from this terrible headache that you girls have caused.

OK, since you have a headache, we probably can’t come up with a plan to catch a killer now, one of the twins said as they both headed towards my front door. I guess we’ll be back tomorrow so we can figure this out.

Wait a minute. Did you say something about catching a killer?

Yep, they said in unison as they turned towards me.

Well, I don’t want any part of this. It’s not like I could help, anyway. I’m not a Deputy. But before you leave, can I know your names?

We don’t go by our real names, the twin closest to the door replied. Remember, spies! No one can know who we truly are.

OK. Creepy. What am I supposed to call you, then? Also, who exactly is the older twin?

Wouldn’t you like to know? they said as they headed out the door. Talk to you tomorrow!

Why is this happening? I felt my head starting to pound. They’re not going to drag me into some spy extravaganza, are they?

Come here, Valley. My pup came bounding towards me. So, what do you think? Will they be back tomorrow?

All she did was stare at me with her brown eyes as she wagged her tail.

What are we going to do?

    Chapter 3

    BANG! BANG! BANG!

Uh, who could that be? What time is it? I mumbled as I turned in my bed and glanced at my clock. WHAT? Five in the morning, this is ridiculous. Who could be at my door at such an outrageous hour? Valley, go see who it is. Sadly, my pup wasn’t moving anywhere.

    BANG! BANG! BANG!

OK, I’m coming; stop banging, I yelled as I stumbled out of my bed.

    THUNK!

Ouch! I grabbed my foot. Whoever is at the door is going to get full blame for my throbbing toe! I peered out the peephole to see who it was, but instead, all I saw was another eyeball. Ah! I hit the floor.

Hello, Deputy, we know you’re in there, said a familiar voice.

Oh no, it’s the twins again. What to do, what to do? OK, use a mama’s voice. I cleared my throat to speak. He’s not here right now; he’s out with his friends.

Come on, Deputy, we know it’s you. Open the door.

That didn’t go as planned, I grumbled as I opened the front door. Leave me alone, I said in between my teeth.

Well now, is that a nice way to greet a friend? one of the twins replied as they both barged through the door.

We’re not friends; if anything, we’re enemies. You did fall on me earlier, I said as I gimped to the
