How to Improve Your Reading Skills
1
Self-Esteem Builder
H-E-L-L-O Y-O-U!!! Before I get started on how to improve your reading, I would like to just have a talk with you. Tell me if you fit into any of these categories:
•I cannot read.
•I read too slow.
•My friends laugh at me.
•I do not like to read out loud.
There may be more reasons why you do not read well, but as of today, let go of all that. I will take your answer on my site, www.basicskillstoday.com.
Everything that has stopped you from reading, let it go!!! Put it in the backpack; put it in the trash—I do not want you to use any more reasons for not reading well. You are going to improve your reading. I do not want you to use any more excuses for not reading. I want you to tell yourself, every day, I can read, and I will read better.
Say it three to five times in the mirror: I can read, and I can read better.
Do not get discouraged with yourself. Do not allow anybody else to discourage you from reading.
I am getting ready to share something with you that might shock you. Let us go back to the basics. When you first started having issues with reading, were you reading one word per page, two words per page, or three sentences per page? Whatever the case may be, go back to when you stopped reading. I hear you if you are saying, You know what? That is too easy for me,
or if you say, I passed that level in the ninth grade,
or in the 6th grade,
or I’m in college
—whatever the reason, today is the time for the new you.
You started out with one word per page up until now, but you lost that. Go get the easiest book now! I am not telling you to go get a book that has one word per page; if you are more advanced, get what is comfortable for you. I am not telling you to get the book that has three words per page; get a book that has five sentences, or whatever the case may be.
Just get yourself a book and open it up and start reading. I want you to read proudly; if you are stumbling over the words, that is fine. If you get stuck because you cannot pronounce a word, that is fine. If you think you need to ask somebody how to pronounce that word, that is fine also. I want you, at this moment, to stop and tell yourself, "I can read! I can do it! I will improve my reading! Yes, I can improve my
