Essential Oils
What Are Essential Oils
Essential oils are the compounds that are extracted from different kinds of plants and flowers, in which the essential oil captures the plant or flowers unique scent, liquid and other properties. Each Essential Oil has different characteristics and can be used to help a wide range of physical and mental health conditions and illnesses by activating and speeding up your bodies healing process, easing the symptoms of short term or long term conditions and providing relaxation to the mind and body to help relieve stress. Essential oils are produced by extracting the oil from certain plants and flowers through methods known as distillation or expression. Distillation is where the raw plant material is put into a distillation apparatus, this is placed over water that is heated and the essential oils are then extracted. Most of the common essential oils like lavender oil, tea tree oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil and many more are all produced using the distillation method. Expression or cold pressing is where the citrus peel from fruits are pressed to extract the oil from the peel, many citrus oils like orange oil, lemon oil, lime oil, grapefruit oil and many more are produced using expression.
There are many different types of essential oils they are distinguished by categorising the essential oil scent (notes) which are known as Top Notes, Middle Notes and Base Notes.
Top Notes or Head Notes are manly the thin, lighter oils like Orange oil, Lemon oil, Lime oil, Peppermint oil, Grapefruit Oil, Lemongrass Oil, Eucalyptus oil and many more. Top Notes are known as the essential oil that can drip out of the bottle fast they can evaporate quickly and usually have a sharp and fresh scent. These types of essential oils are more effective at uplifting your body and mind and can have anti-viral properties. Middle Notes or Heart Notes bring balance between the Top Notes and the Base Notes.
The Middle Notes are Chamomile oil, Lavender oil, Rosemary oil, Geranium oil, Palmarosa Oil, Marjoram oil, Black Pepper Oil, Nutmeg Oil and many more. Middle Notes help the Top Notes and the Base Notes come together, they don’t evaporate as quickly as Top Notes and they usually take a few minutes to establish their scent. Middle Notes normally have a soft and warm scent and are extracted from spices and herbs.
Base Notes are the thick essential oils they are Cedarwood Oil, Jasmine Oil, Frankincense Oil, Sandalwood Oil, Rose Oil, Myrrh Oil, Ginger Oil and many more. Base Notes are known as the essential oils that take ages to drip out of the bottle. They take the longest to evaporate and can slow down the evaporation of other Essential Oils. Base Note usually add depth to essential oil blends and normally they have an intense richness to their scent. Base Notes are extracted from the bark or roots of trees and plants and they are more effective at slowing down and grounding the body and mind.
You should store all of your essential oils in glass bottles, colour glass would be the best type to use when creating your essential oil blends. Colour glass protects the essential oils against the Suns Ultraviolet (UV) light as this can alter the essential oils and destroy the oils scent and healing properties. Usually amber glass bottles are used to store essential oils but you can use any coloured glass or frosted glass bottle if amber glass is not available. Essential oil bottles can come in 10ml and contain about 200 drops of essential oil or 15ml bottles contain about 300 drops of essential oil. You can buy essential oils bottles on-line, in health food shops or you can re-use your old empty essential oils bottles just make sure to wash them out thoroughly before use. Undiluted essential oils should not be stored in plastic bottles as the oils can break down the plastic which will cause leakage and destroy the scent and healing properties of the essential oil. Essential oils need to be stored in cool, dark place away from the Sun’s ultraviolet light and any heat source as this can destroy the scent and healing properties of the essential oil. You can store your essential oils in a cupboard, a container or an essential oil box. Some people like to store their essential oils in a fridge or freezer which can help preserve the oil. If you choose this method of storage please make sure to remove the oils from the fridge or freezer in plenty of time so the essential oil can return to room temperature before using.
Keep all of your essential oils up high out of the reach of any children or any of your pets in order to prevent them from accidental ingesting the oils. Pay attention to the oils expiration dates as some oils have a shorter shelf life than others. You can extend the shelf life by storing your essential oils in proper conditions. Most essential oils usually last up to two years and some essential oils can last a few years longer before they lose their effectiveness. Some essential oils improve with age such as Sandalwood Oil, Ylang-Ylang Oil and Patchouli Oil and can last over ten years.
With proper storage the essential oils that can last up to two years are lemon Oil, Frankincense Oil, Orange Oil and Bergamot Oil.
With proper storage the essential oils that can last up to four years are Eucalyptus Oil, Rosemary Oil and Laurel Leaf Oil.
With proper storage the essential oils that can last up to five years are Lemongrass Oil, Melissa Oil, Clove Oil and Oregano Oil.
With proper storage the essential oils that can last up to six years are Lavender Oil, Clary Sage Oil, Peppermint Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Chamomile Oil, Thyme Oil, Sage Oil, Basil Oil, Nutmeg Oil, Tarragon Oil and Fennel Oil.
With proper storage the essential oils that can last up to ten years are Cedarwood Oil, Myrrh Oil, Ginger Oil and Vetiver Oil.
Essential oils are unregulated and the quality of essential oils can greatly vary. Any essential oils that are diluted with chemicals, synthetic fragrances or additives are not considered true high quality essential oils and should not be used as some can be toxic if inhaled or applied to the skin. When buying essential oils always look for essential oil brands that have a good reputation and are chemical free 100% pure essential oils. High quality pure essential oils that are extracted through distillation or cold pressing will always list the plant or the flowers botanical name on the packaging or in the list of ingredients for example Lavender oil’s botanical name is (Lavrndula Officinalis). Any essential oil brands that claim to be pure essential oil but does not contain the plant or flowers botanical name on the packaging or on the essential oils list of ingredients may be diluted with chemicals, synthetic fragrances or additives, these are not 100% pure essential oil and it is advised not to use them.
Essential oils can be used on their own or combined together to create a blend where the oils work so well together they can enhance each other’s qualities which makes the essential oils more effective and can give better healing results. If applying Essential oils onto your skin you must always use Carrier oil with your oil blends as essential oils can be really potent and they can cause skin irritation if applied on its own directly onto your skin. Carrier oils help by diluting the potency of the essential oils, however they do not interfere with the essential oils healing properties and they can assist the essential oil by helping it absorb into your skin and preventing the essential oil from evaporating too quickly.
The amount of Essential oils you use in each blend will vary however it is recommended that you use small amount of the essential oil instead of large amounts. Your body cannot cope with high amounts of essential oils and it will only use the amount of essential oil it needs and then excretes the rest of the essential oils out of the body through your urine. So if you are putting 10 or more drops of each essential oil per blend and you have 4 to 5 essential oils per blend, your body will not be able to cope with this amount of essential oil. Your body will only use the small amount of essential oils it needs and will get rid of the rest through urination. Essential Oils can be expensive and by you overloading your blends with too much essential oil, you will end up wasting your essential oils and throwing away good money. Start by adding small amounts of essential oils to your chosen Carrier oil, about 1 to 3 drops of each essential oil is more than enough for any essential oil blend and this will have the same remarkable healing qualities and it will put less pressure on your body to get rid of any excess oil. The amount to use in a 10ml bottle blend is normally calculated by you adding 1 to 3 drops of Essential Oil to 2 tablespoons of the Carrier Oil. This is more than enough essential oil to activate and speed up the bodies healing process, provide relaxation, relieve stress and promote self-healing in your body, mind and spirit.
Carrier Oils
Carrier oils are base oils that are used to dilute essential oils before applying them to your skin. Essential oils can be quite potent and can cause skin irritation and other skin issues when applied directly to the skin so it is necessary to use carrier oil when making up any essential oil blends in order to make the oils safe to be applied to the skin surface. While carrier oils dilute the potency of the essential oil they do not interfere with the essential oils healing or therapeutic properties.
Carrier oils also help the essential oil to be absorbed into the skin better as they prevent the essential oil from evaporate off the skin surface too quickly and help carry the essential oil into the deep layers of the skin and into the bloodstream where the essential oil can be transported to any area within the body that requires healing.
Carrier oils can also allow the essential oils to be spread over a larger area of the body particular when giving an essential oil massage. The carrier oil allows the persons hands to glide over the skin easily due to the non-sticky and light consistency of the carrier oil which can help the essential oil penetrate deeply over large surface areas of the skin to bring about healing and wellness to multiple areas within your body.
Carrier oils are usually referred to as vegetable oils as they are often produced from the fatty portions of the plant or flower which is usually the nuts, kernels or seeds of the plant or flower. Carrier oils have different properties and can have multiple uses and some can have their own healing properties as they contain fatty extracts, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that can help improve the skin and bring about healing benefits within the body.
Carrier oils are produced by a process known as cold pressing, this is a chemical free process where the plant or the flowers nuts, kernels or seeds are crushed or pressed without heat been applied and the oil is then filtered. Cold pressing results in a higher quality carrier oil and the oil can have a better scent and colour. Most carrier oils can be odourless however some can have a faint scent that can be either nutty or sweet and they do not evaporate on the skin surface like essential oils do, this is why Carrier Oils can be referred to as fixed oils.
Carry oils should be stored in a cool, dark place away from the Sun’s ultraviolet light in a cupboard or a container. The lid of the Carrier oil bottle must be kept on tight as the more air or sunlight the carrier oil is exposed to the quicker the carrier oil can turn rancid or gone off. If your carrier oil has turned rancid, the oil will have a strong, bitter or pungent smell and sometime the carrier oil can change colour. Do not use any carrier oil that has turned rancid as they can be considered very toxic. You can store your carrier oils in the fridge which can help preserve them. If you choose this method of storage, make sure the carrier oil has return to room temperature before using and be aware that the fridge can cause your carrier oils to appear cloudy or solid but should return to normal consistency at room temperature.
Pay attention to your carrier oils expiry dates as some carrier seed oils like sunflower, flax and sesame can have shorter shelf life whereas jojoba and coconut oils has a longer shelf life.
