kicks our knees right out from under us

blocks us

tries to prevent us from seeing what’s good

from appreciating

how lucky we are

how truly blessed

beyond all else

glancing over at those we love

smiling, welling up

beaming with pride

all that they’ve accomplished

all that they’ve become

peeking into their futures

imagining

wondering

then all at once

the media slams

slams down hard

grabbing us tightly by the arms

yanking us

back to reality

slammed

the missing child

the sick friend

the corrupt politician

terrorism

drug addiction

mental illness

school shootings

pollution

the list eternal

yet close at heart

i know them

i feel their pain

my empathic nature

swallows me

i try to settle

as my heartbeat quickens

breath shortens

the knot twists and aches in my belly

the fears grip

taking over

the worries concern

disturb me

they even my breathing

they untie my knots
