    Foreword

One of nature’s most astonishing bonds is that of parents and their offspring. Children are a joy to have and a great blessing for so many parents. The author of this book wants to share how blessed she is to be a mother. She is my wife, and I was honored with my wife’s request when I was asked to write the Foreword for her latest book which is dedicated to our son Adriel. In this book, Rutendo shares her experiences on the journey to parenthood. This book is as much an insightful retreat into the past as it is a wide-ranging revelation. I for one knows that once one assumes the onerous duty of documenting one’s own life narrative, the first challenge is that of candour. The story develops into a riveting tale that remains centered on love, for the scripture also commands us to do everything in love, – Corinthians 16:14. Some people live for themselves, some for others and unfortunately some do not know why. Life is an interesting journey full of its ups and downs.

Life would be boring if we were able to predict every moment of it. But again, as human beings, we were created to think and hope for things even if they were not present in our lives or seemed impossible to get. That is the power of faith that was planted in us by our creator. He told us how to activate this powerful tool called faith in scripture. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen, – Hebrews 11:1. Nothing is possible without God, because of that, we need God to help us to achieve our goals, but that can’t happen if we do not have faith, because it is impossible to please God without faith – Hebrews 11:6. But just having faith alone is also not enough, one must work towards that which they seek, otherwise faith without works is dead, – James 2:14.

Back in 2012 when I was courting my wife before we got married a year later, I was very sure that I wanted to live the rest of my life with her. At the time, we were both studying at a University in Blantyre, Malawi. We started discussing marriage and our future children. We researched names together and came up with a list of 4 names, two for boys and the other two for girls. We had also discussed the number of children that we wanted to have, even though that was still always open for debate. A month before we got married, we agreed to not have children in the first 3 years of our marriage. We wanted to enjoy our marriage and work towards our Children’s futures. We made this conscious sacrifice knowing fully well that no good thing comes without sacrifices. The only way the parachute comes out is when you have taken the risk of jumping, if you can’t take that leap of faith and jump, the parachute will stay intact.

We were hungry in fulfilling our plans and we didn’t want anything or anyone derailing us. We had too much at stake to capitulate to other people’s wishes and plans for us, we could not afford to wallow in nostalgia because of people. We were criticized by so many people for the choices we made to run our lives, some meant well, but for the most part, the critique was profoundly unfounded. We didn’t mind being ridiculed by people who were always ready to impose their own wishes and plans on others. We believed that our decision was the right decision for our family, and we were happy with our decision. But the inevitable happened, nosy people started asking us when we would have children. This was the time that I got to see how torn apart Rutendo was, not only because of the invasive and very annoying questions, but also because of the evident fact that some people wanted
