‘Now pay attention Alexander, this is important!’ Spartus’s monotonous voice could be heard all across the ceremonial hall. Alexander watched the old fairy as he started to explain the proceedings for the solstice celebrations.

Spartus was the oldest fairy Alexander knew. He was 900 years old, a dithery fairy with long white hair that came down to his knees. ‘If something is worth doing, it is worth doing properly’ was his favourite saying. Trouble was it took him forever to do anything.

As Spartus wittered on, Alexander started to day dream. He was remembering the last adventure he’d had with his best friend, Xana. The two fairies had battled with huge black and white monsters; the giant beasts were too slow, as they tried to attack them with their tails. The monsters were no match for the nimble fairies.

A loud bang made Alexander jump, his wings fluttered as Spartus clapped loudly in his ear. ‘Fairy princes do not day dream!’ Spartus scolded.

A trumpet sound outside the hall announced the arrival of the King and Queen.

‘Ah Spartus, how are the preparations going?’ asked King Frederic.

‘Very well your majesty,’ replied Spartus, coming out of a low bow, ‘The Prince and I were just going over the proceedings for tomorrow nights ceremony.’

    ‘Excellent!’ said King Frederic smiling.

The King was a short fairy with a round tummy, that wobbled when he laughed. He wore a gold crown, adorned with amethysts; which sparkled when they caught the light. It sat upon his short, greying hair. He wore a long purple gown that matched the jewels of his crown. One of his wings was slightly bent; an old battle wound he’d received during the Great Troll War. The King carried a staff made of ash, set on top of the staff was the Aquarius stone. The staff never left the King’s side.

Alexander looked nothing like his father; he was tall and slender with short black hair and green eyes, like his mother. Queen Elsabeth was the most beautiful fairy across the whole kingdom. Her long black hair almost touched the ground, she had soft green eyes and fair skin. She was a quiet, pensive fairy; fair but strict. She also wore a crown, smaller than the king’s and set with sapphires. Like the king, she wore a gown of purple, fitted to emphasise her beautiful figure. Queen Elsabeth smiled down at her son, her eyes glittering as she spoke.

‘I hope you are paying attention to Spartus, you will be 300 years old in a week
