    The dragon in this story is based not on the dragons out of western European folklore, but those found in eastern European fairy tales.  Where they tended to be not the behemoths you find in modern fantasy, but rather closer to human size.

    Which has a number of consequences. . . .

    She sat by the fire.  It did not make her feel warmer—she pulled her shawl closer—but the flames, pale as candlelight, shed the only light.  At times, she was glad that this was only a low cottage, with four rooms.  It was smaller than those of many peasants, but a castle would only hold so many more dark corners.
