    Along the way, trees grew wherever men had not hewn pastures and fields from them.  Sometimes so thickly that their branches left the riders in shadows near as dark as night, and here they had ridden for more than a day in such gloom.

    Abruptly, the trees stopped.  Scrub grew to every hand.  Some bushes stood high enough to block the sight of a standing man, but most rose no higher than his knee.  Hills to the north were blue but clearly visible, and Eadwin could see this wasteland held neither houses nor fields nor pasture.  And few birds, which neither twittered among the branches, nor soared against the sky.

    As they rode on, fewer bushes grew, and the ground had only bare rock,
