The Three Waves of Life (Part Two)

Author’s Words
The American Journalist Edgar Snow described in the last chapter of his book <When you are lucky enough to look back into the shadows of the past, you will realize that the life is not measured by years, months, or days, but how many different kinds of life you have lived through. Retrospectively, you’ll notice at a certain point, one kind of life has passed quietly, and another kind of life has begun at the same time.
This sentence and the book title are the only remaining memories I have left for Journey to The Beginning
. But it was this very sentence that gave me the idea of editing and publishing my blog posts after participating in the Another Year of the Geng Zi
essay competition organized by the WWW Chinese Reader Network. I want to preface the years of my life based on my experience and ignore the flowing numbers of years, months, and days.
Mr. Edgar Snow also authored <
During the early years of Chinese economic reform, the book The Third Wave
by Alvin Toffler swept through the nation and had a far-reaching impact on the Chinese people. It was a great shock and a reminder to a country that just opened itself up to the world that it can no longer afford to miss such a historical opportunity. China needed to catch the third wave
on the road to revival. Throughout history, this is true for a country, and so is for a person. Looking back at my life, it also consists of three waves: the first wave of participating in the Down to the Countryside Movement during the Cultural Revolution era; the second wave of going abroad during the Chinese economic reform era; and lastly, the third wave of running marathons during the era of self-actualization. This is where the book title The Three Waves of Life
comes from – I’m currently riding on my third wave of running marathons, and the tide is going strong. The previous two waves of my life have come and gone, immersing into the sand of time and the memory of words.
I am the same age as New China! My generation grew up under the red flag of Communist-ruled China, and it is impossible not to be affected. This generation is also referred to as the Baby Boomers in the Western world. Interestingly, someone who was born in the eastern kingdom ends up immigrating to the kingdom of Baby Boomers and has lived and worked with people here for decades. Wall Street Journal once referred to this generation of Chinese as among the hardest work-working people in the world. It was during this generation that China begins to industrialize rapidly and eventually became the second-largest economy in the world. In today’s age of globalization, the United States and China are the two greatest powers, and a lot of people believe that the two are decoupling and will be going to war. I call that nonsense. Haters gonna hate and doomsayers will always be pessimistic. I firmly believe that the responsibility of this generation of two countries is to strengthen mutual understanding, eliminate misunderstandings, and progress together. There can only be world peace when peace exists between the United States and China.
I was once a Red Guard and later an Educated Youth. I wrote political propaganda posters (Big-character posters) on the Four Olds back in 1966, naively thought that was the revolution and the final battle to Capitalism. Two years later, as a participant of the Down to the Countryside Movement, I went to the rural area of Shanxi and spent three and half years there working. While working in the fields, I often look up at the sky and wonder what the other side of the world is like. A year later, in 1969, I heard the Americans have landed on the moon from the news. I was in awe. My goal at that time was not to land on the moon but to land in America first as it’s closest to the moon. To reach that goal, I waited for 25 years - that’s a quarter of a century I waited. I think our whole life is a process of looking at the moon, dreaming about the moon, and reaching the moon.
My life is like a marathon: I have already finished the first 20 miles; the focus now is how to finish the last 6 miles strong. Looking back at my life marathon, all the hardships along the way have become the scenery of the past, only the cheering at the finishing line remains fascinating. Running through my life of marathon, what inspires me has always been the goals ahead; always been the ocean of stars and the vast universe.
