The Gentle Life - Thomas S Klobucher

    CHAPTER ONE

Follow the Golden Rule: No Gentleperson Ever Breaks It on Purpose.

Let everyone regulate his conduct ... by the golden rule of doing to others as in similar circumstances we would have them do to us, and the path of duty will be clear before him.

    —WILLIAM WILBERFORCE

We’ll begin with the big idea that supports every single syllable you’ll be reading in this book—the idea that informs and inspires, not just gentle behavior, but a successful life as a human being. It can be found in any Bible, in Matthew 7:12: So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.

This is the core principle for having a happy family life, for sustaining a successful marriage, for launching and growing a thriving business, and for maintaining any human relationship. And it’s the principle with which we’re going to begin our examination of gentle behavior. The gentleperson may not be perfect—none of us is—but he or she will never consciously subject someone else to behaviors or attitudes that he or she would not want to experience personally. To follow this rule, you must get into the habit of asking yourself a very simple, but profound, question: How would I feel if I were on the receiving end of the action I’m considering?

Posing that question honestly and with an open mind, reflecting on the answer that comes back, and acting in accordance with the deepest, most empathetic choice you can muster, is the essence of the Golden Rule. At the end of the day, following the Golden Rule means understanding that we should expect to be judged by our Creator with respect to our willingness and ability to put it into practice.

One of my favorite stories about this rule being followed in a practical sense comes from the world of baseball. Back in 1947, the president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey, was meeting with Happy Chandler, the president of the National League, about a talented prospect the Dodgers wanted to bring up to the majors to play first base: Jackie Robinson. Robinson, of course, was black. Most of the major-league owners were dead-set against the idea of bringing an African American into the big leagues.

We faced each other in my walnut log cabin, Chandler recalled, years later. "Logs blazed and crackled in my great stone fireplace. We needed that fire. It was a cold, raw January day. I told Branch, ‘The other owners will never agree. You’re all alone. I know you are here asking me for help. I’m the only person on earth who can approve the transfer of that contract from Montreal to Brooklyn. I have one question for you. Can Robinson play
