Transformational Relationships - Thomas S Klobucher
CHAPTER 1
The Anatomy of Transformation
Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
—Francis of Assisi
The best possible life is not a transaction. It’s a transformation.
It’s that kind of life I have in mind for you as a reader of this book. Think for a moment about the exchange my friend had with his granddaughter. The default setting, the business-as-usual script, for their trip to the restaurant would have been for my friend to ignore the little girl’s bad mood or to try to correct
it with instructions: Cheer up. Stop being such a sourpuss. What’s wrong with you today?
And so on. Those would have been transactions, because his granddaughter would have disengaged quickly from them, and everyone present would have gone forward without any inkling of what was possible in terms of renewal, both of themselves and of others. The server would have come and gone, the bill would have been paid, and no one would have emerged having learned or experienced anything new.
That’s not a transformation—it is merely a transaction!
A transformational relationship is a relationship that leads with possibility and amazement—and uses possibility and amazement to help people to become their best selves, not their worst selves.
This is the anatomy of transformation. Amazement is all about possibility. Instead of lecturing his granddaughter with a stern face about the importance of smiling, my friend focused on the possibility inherent in the situation and did a little smiling himself: What would happen if…?
It’s important to make a conscious effort to build these kinds of questions and interactions into daily life. When life is a series of transactions, we may look at others as a commodity, and we may come to be looked at ourselves as disposable. On the other hand, if we are offering transformational ideas that will lead to great value for everyone involved, we are participating in a valuable relationship. This is the power of amazement and possibility.
Allow me to share with you three transformational tools.
THE FIRST TRANSFORMATIONAL TOOL: ASKING OTHERS QUESTIONS—WITH A GENUINE WILLINGNESS TO DISCOVER THE ANSWER TOGETHER
The door to amazement only opens to those who are willing to ask questions without preconception. (What would happen if…?
) The path to becoming your best self starts with committing to become a lifetime learner and having an attitude of wonder and excitement as you interact with the giftedness and creativity inherent in yourself and others.
This, then, is the bedrock of all transformational relationships: A willingness to be surprised, to learn, to see new possibilities.
This openness to amazement gives us a lifelong advantage over those who do not sustain and support transformation!
And unfortunately, that’s the majority of the people we run into on a given day. So many people seem to be focused on what’s not working, what their limitations are, what makes them angry, and what makes life unworkable. By opening ourselves to amazement, we can create a major advantage in a world where most people don’t even see the gifts of possibility and amazement that are always in front of us.
Once we recognize this advantage and start using it to serve ourselves and others, it can become part of who we are for the rest of our lives, in all of our relationships and all of our undertakings. It starts with us being willing to be amazed!
If you are amazed at some new possibility in your life, you are, by definition, not
