    The clouds thundered and roared, flashing the night sky. It had been raining heavily for three days and the pitter-patter of the raindrops soothed the residents of Houghton in those misty nights. There was a bolt of lightning in the sky shortly followed by a roaring sound of thunder.

    Dad! Why is it that we see the light in the sky first and hear thunder shortly after that? Joe asked his father the moment he entered the room. He was sitting by the window for the past few minutes, closely observing the rain pattern. Joe had bright orange hair with glittery brown eyes and was a very keen observer of his surroundings.

    His father smiled pinching his cheek, Well, Joe, that’s because light travels faster than sound, and so you see the light in the sky first and hear thunder later, Joe drowned in thought for a moment. Come on now, Joe. Your mother is waiting for you at the dinner table, Joe happily ran out of the room.

    Mom! Stephen and Maddy told me something strange today, said Joe to his mother in a confused tone. She was working in the kitchen.

    What is it, love? What did they say? she asked. She knew Maddy, Stephen, and Laura were Joe’s best friends in school. Laura lived in this town, while Maddy and Stephen lived in the hostel. They were from other far-off towns.

    Umm... It’s weird; they were walking back to the hostel last night and heard someone say their names in a creepy voice. They turned around; there was nothing but the rustling of leaves. They ignored and started walking again, but it happened again. So they ran to the hostel as fast as they could. Isn’t this strange? Joe looked a bit scared. His mother laughed.

    Oh, darling. It must be some boys from the senior class. You know Halloween is around the corner, and boys do such things just for fun. Don’t overthink it. Come on now, call your sister to the dining table. She had been hearing
