    FOREWORD

This story takes place in a fictitious city called ‘Silver-Lo’. This city is located somewhere in this world.

    1

    THE BEGINNING

Some doors are better not opened, some books are better not read, some lives are better not touched, some lies are better not revealed and some secrets are better not made. These simple truths had no relevance to her life until now. These truths, for her, merely existed in myths and legends.

She lived in a small city called ‘Silver-Lo’. It was a quiet place where everyone dug their noses into other’s businesses. But she liked it there. She had many friends, but two were the best. She attended a neat little school located right in the middle of the city, the best school in the city. To be honest, it was a little too neat for her liking. In other words it was boring, because nothing ever in a million years could happen in that school! Of course no one could predict the future, and she was not an exception.

This girl, who was about to turn thirteen years old in a month’s time was very happy to be alive. Her name was Elli Carter. Her complexion was fair and her features were bold. Her hair, straight and just below the shoulders were the closest shade to black. She was fit and healthy. But her best feature, were her eyes. An unusual dark blue in the light, but almost black otherwise.

Hey, do you reckon the lunch ladies poison our food? asked her friend, Simon Write, one same old same day, when they were sitting in the cafeteria during lunchtime.

When nobody answered, he said, Well, I’ll take poison instead of this food any day. The food that the school provided was bound to make anyone nauseate.

The cafeteria was a nice rectangular hall with plenty of tall windows, each having beautiful peach colored curtains. The tables were lined in neat rows and the food counter sat in the centre of the room.

Yah alright. Hey guys, Elli said, remembering something, It’s about our science project. I asked my mom and she said we could all meet at my place this Friday and get done with it once and for all. And then let’s all enjoy dinner together.

My parents are going out of the country on Friday for my sister’s convocation ceremony. As there is no one to pick me up late at night, can I stay over with you, Elli? said one of Elli’s two best friends, Sally Brown! She was as tall as Elli. Beautiful and smart, with light brown hair which flowed down smoothly over her shoulders.

"Of course, you are more than welcome. In fact, why don’t you all stay over? It will be fun and next day is a Saturday anyway," Elli said.

That will be great! Auden Langston, Lisa Stellar, Simon Write, Sally Brown and her other best bud, Bill Clad exclaimed. Bill was her friend since pre-school. Taller than her, he was the sweetest boy she ever knew. His hair, same color as hers, was always ruffled, standing up at odd angles.

Little did she know that her happy-go-lucky life was about to veer towards the weird.

Just then the school bell rang and all of them grudgingly made their way towards their various classes. Elli had Biology which was by far her worst class of the day. Her thoughts kept drifting to Friday, and so when she was asked a question about some sea creature by her teacher, she couldn’t answer and was thus made to stand outside the class. Elli didn’t mind this of course, because this meant that she could return to her beautiful thoughts again!

The entire day rushed away leaving them with homework assigned by Miss Jorge, their geometry teacher. They made their way to the bus and slumped tiredly on the seats.

Bye guys! So Friday fixed. See you all tomorrow! Elli said as she got off the bus at her stop. Her beautiful home, a small stone cottage, stood right in front of her. The front yard had a well maintained garden, with the flower beds showing lilies in full bloom.

It was supposed to be a cold December afternoon, yet it was surprisingly hot! It was quite abnormal! These days almost everything was?!

Elli entered her house and found her mother in the living room, engrossed in a book. Elli looked distinctly like her mother, Katherine. A part time pre-school teacher, Katherine was an extremely affectionate, yet a very gutsy and spirited person.

    Hey mom! Elli said.

Hi El! How was your day? she asked.

Same old same! Just as dull as everyday…why do we live in such a boring city? Elli replied, feeling a rising temper.

Strangely enough, since the past few days, her bad mood always lingered near the surface, not knowing when and why it would break out!

After taking a breath to calm herself down, she continued, So my friends agreed to come over this Friday. I said they could stay over. Is it fine? she asked, hoping for a positive answer.

Well sure…my colleague’s daughter is throwing a cocktail party this Friday and your dad and I are invited, so I’ll prepare dinner and then the house can be yours till we come back, mom said.

Great! Now I’ll go and make a list of the things everyone has to get, saying that, she left for her room. Elli couldn’t help but notice that her parents went to these business functions an awful lot lately.

    *

Thursday night’s sleep was very weird and at the same time a very pleasant one. Her dreams circled around her friends, but instead of five, there seemed to be a sixth person, silhouetted for no good reason. She simply couldn’t recognize who this new person was.

As the dream advanced, the person became ever more unrecognizable. The presence of such a person was uncomfortably frightening. Eventually, seeing no way to escape, Elli woke up with a start. Tiny beads of sweat broke out on her forehead. Unable to fall asleep again, she eventually dozed off in the wee hours of the morning.

Oh I JUST slept! she yelled as the shrieking alarm clock began to irritate her. Alright alright, I’ll wake up…just keep quiet.

Elli got out of bed reluctantly, and very grudgingly got ready. She came down and headed towards the kitchen to grab some breakfast.

Rise and shine! I made you your favorite breakfast…omelette with fries and some bacon accompanied with fresh toasts on the side! said her dad.

I don’t exactly feel like shining dad. I didn’t sleep well last night.

A lawyer by profession, Elli’s dad Joe, short for Jonathan, shared a special bond with his daughter. For her, he was the bravest man ever, who always seemed to have a solution for everything.

Well then, today is just the perfect day for some good healthy breakfast! dad said.

As she took a huge bite of her omelette, she tried recalling her dream and the person in it, but no good came out of it. Trying to recognize the person when awake was just as hopeless as it was when she was asleep. She finally gave up when the sound of her approaching school bus grew louder.

Bye dad! Say bye to mom for me when she gets out of the shower! saying that, Elli rushed out of the house.

The yellow school bus was heading towards her. As it screeched to a halt outside her house, Elli jumped in and saw Bill and Sally sitting at the rear end of the bus, talking incessantly.

As she approached them, they greeted her with broad smiles.

Hi El! Don’t you look cheerful? asked Sally in a sarcastic tone.

Elli grimaced as she took her place beside Bill, I can’t help it! Blame it on the bad dreams.

The topic changed as Simon hopped in at the next stop. Elli was glad for the diversion.

Oh listen, this is for you, the list of things you have to get, Elli said, handing a square piece of paper to each of them.

Sketch pens, pencils, etc….etc…. and chewing gum? That’s on a ‘things to get list’? asked Sally grinning.

Yah, you know our friends…we love any kind of food! Elli said laughing.

"That’s it, welcome to another fun day! Ha Ha Ha…" said Benny, their witty bus driver as he drove through the school gates.

Bye Benny! said Simon as they descended from the bus.

Their first stop was the cafeteria where they all gathered every day before school started. Lisa and Auden, who generally came to school early for exercise, joined them shortly. Elli handed them their lists too.

Thanks! The weather is so horrible. It’s supposed to be cold and here we are, sweating like a bunch of pigs, said Auden frowning.

I’m really looking forward to the sleepover tomorrow El, said Lisa as they settled in their chairs.

After about fifteen minutes, the school bell rang. Leaving the cafeteria, they all parted to go to their respective classes. Sally and Elli had Social Studies. History was a subject that always caught Elli’s interest. Mrs. Heck, their teacher, made every era come alive.

    *

The rest of the morning flew by. One minute they were in class and the next minute they were back in the cafeteria, hungry for lunch.

They were all busy gobbling their veggie sandwiches, when Bill suddenly sprung a question on them,

So are you all really game for the sleepover?

Of course I am! said Simon.

    Me too, said Auden.

I wouldn’t miss it for the world! exclaimed Lisa.

Elli saw Bill shift uneasily in his chair. His eyes kept darting from one person to another, almost as if he was examining the situation. Some kind of
