About this ebook

With the next World Cup rapidly approaching, the best players must be chosen from the nation's talent - 22 players will make the cut, many will miss out.

Aiden Lewis is ready to try out for the team, knowing that he will be one of the more mature players to be called up but he is certainly not too old to earn a place. Will his fitness let him down? Since the last World Cup, he hasn't played even a whole season, for many different reasons. With his home life settled and his position on the pitch back on track with Richmond, will it be enough to meet national standards?

It seems that the England manager has his eye on Aiden, and doesn't just want him on the team for his prowess on the pitch.

Yvonne Marrs

Invernesian Yvonne Marrs (1982-present day) has loved writing for as long as she can remember, moving to the London area at the age of 19 to pursue her dream of becoming a published author. Yvonne graduated from UHI (Inverness College) with an HND in Administration and Information Management, a set of skills she puts to good use to organise herself and her work - especially as she has her own publishing company, WTSMP Publications. Currently Yvonne has published several fictional series - the 'When The Sax Man Plays' series, the 'Football Crazy' series, the 'Aiden Lewis octet', 'Can't Buy Health' series and 'Undeserved'. Yvonne dreamt up the idea that formed the "When The Sax Man Plays" (WTSMP) series after falling in love with saxophone music, and being inspired by Leona Lewis' dream X Factor win. To throw an ordinary person in an ordinary job, with an extraordinary talent into superstardom is the story behind WTSMP. The central character, Jason Bottelli is such a person, although we soon discover he is far from ordinary! If you like your fiction easy going, entertaining, enthralling and heart-warming, you'll fall in love with the musical romance that is the WTSMP series. The ever popular "Football Crazy" series follows our central character, Aiden Lewis, as he rises through the football ranks. From club player to International sensation; through to his management career, leading England into the World Cup and then his brother's local team, the London Giants, from nowhere into the Premiership as the series progresses. Aiden's story continues with the 'Aiden Lewis octet', finishing with 'Undeserved'. There are standalone books as well as those in a series: 'Castiliano Vulgo' - a fictional work on 16th Century London life written using both Elizabethan English and Modern English. 'Inexorable' - a murder erotica written as part of the NaNoWriMo challenge in 2016. 'Putting the Visible into So Called Invisible Illnesses' - a work of 50 poems about living with invisible illnesses, as Yvonne does. 'Harbourtown Murder' - a murder mystery set in fictional Cornwall where a stray cat is the only witness.

Football Crazy 2 - Yvonne Marrs

    Chapter 1

An hour passed while the team showed their fitness levels, with two minutes rest between exercise stations. Dismissed to the showers, they were instructed to return to the boardroom at 4:20pm for the final decision.

Sneaking a glance at his watch, Aiden saw they had only twenty minutes to perform the necessary in order to appear presentable to Fabio. Another test!

At quarter past four, he was the first one in the room. Fabio smiled at him and Aiden returned the friendly gesture, trying to ignore the twinging in his tight muscles. He hadn’t disgraced himself, he knew; he’d heard the officials barking commands at others to ‘keep going’ and ‘don’t stop’ was often repeated. His chances were looking good. Weren’t they?

The first England team’s 4:30pm briefing began with the full squad of twenty two players.

Aiden sat staring into space, unable to believe what had happened. The other two men who hadn’t made the cut had already stomped out of the building and shot off in their flashy, expensive cars.

Now, he was seizing up, feeling his hamstrings tightening with every minute he sat here. The tense muscles in his back and neck were causing him a headache - but Fabio’s words echoed around his head.

I may still need to call on you, if we have injury problems. Please remain available for our matches.

In a way, it was almost worse than being told you weren’t good enough. ‘You’re not our first choice, but we might need you anyway.’

He completely understood the reactions of the two men who had flown off in a rage. Part of him wanted to do the same; part of him talked sense and he remained calm - on the surface at least. He accepted the card from the official remaining in the room with him; signing the relevant forms promising his availability if he was required.

The kids would be in bed by the time he arrived home. Having called Leah to update her, they’d agreed it was for the best.

Aiden could not face Harry’s disappointment at that moment; he could hardly deal with his own. Having been invited to have a massage before he left, he’d gladly accepted, talking to Leah for some of it on speaker phone. Then he decided to have his evening meal, not that he could stomach much, rather  something to sustain him until he arrived home.

Leah hugged him when he arrived home, leaving the house and coming straight to the car as he pulled into the drive.

There’s still a chance. She began.

Aiden nodded, taking in her common sense, having long switched his own off.

She smiled at him, kindly. We should turn off our phones, so you don’t have to speak to anyone tonight.

He nodded again, still unable to find his tongue.

I’ve run you a nice hot bath. She kissed him, looking into his face and reading his grateful expression. I’ve opened a bottle of your favourite wine too.

    He laughed. That sounds... great.

I thought you might say that. She kissed him again, slipping her hand in his and walking with him into the house. I might even join you in the tub. She raised her eyebrows suggestively and he laughed again, suddenly very thankful to have her.

Sitting in the National Training Centre this morning he was gripped by a sudden desire to play for his country again - and to win!

    Would he get a chance?

    Chapter 2

After a week, Aiden stopped jumping on the ringing phone, convinced that the call he desperately wanted to receive would never come.

This was his last chance, no matter what Leah said about players in their mid thirties still doing a good job for their country. He knew this was it ...and he’d blown it. Even now, he had no idea how he had failed to make the cut. He’d been tantalisingly close.

The girls had been excited at the thought of seeing their father play for the national side, but had taken the news casually. It was different with Harry: Aiden could see he was close to tears, and that made him feel even worse - an emotion he hadn’t thought possible.

Leah had come to the rescue - as usual - distracting Harry from his thoughts, chivvying him to get ready for school the next day as it was now past his bedtime. All day Aiden had managed to - mostly - avoid the conversation, but as he’d tucked Harry into bed that night, their conversation had been inevitable. Moments later, Aiden had appeared in the lounge doorway looking crushed. Again, Leah had wordlessly hugged him.

    ––––––––

Days passed, with their lives returning to relative normality. As the week passed, Harry’s wounded look had almost dissipated. Aiden’s demeanour had been quieter than usual this week, even the children had noticed.

Leah left him sitting on the sofa, wrapped in his thoughts to settle the girls and then Harry for the evening. She wondered how to get her husband to come out of his shell; wondering if Time would do the job itself, or if she’d have
